Question 1

Which of the following best describes the concept of adaptation in the context of natural selection?

Accepted Answer

A heritable trait that increases an organism's chance of survival and reproduction in a specific environment.

Question 2

Which of the following is NOT one of the three key features of natural selection?

Accepted Answer

Individuals evolving within their lifetime

Question 3

A population of mice has a heritable variation in fur color. Over time, darker mice survive better in a forest environment due to camouflage. Which step of natural selection does this scenario best illustrate?

Accepted Answer

Differential survival and reproduction

Question 4

Which of the following statements about evolution is TRUE?

Accepted Answer

Evolution is a change in the genetic composition of populations over time.

Question 5

Which equation best represents the change in allele frequency in a population over time due to natural selection?

Accepted Answer

$$\Delta p = p' - p$$

Question 6

Which of the following is a common misconception about natural selection?

Accepted Answer

Individuals evolve during their lifetime.

Question 7

A population of insects develops resistance to a pesticide over several generations. Which concept does this scenario best illustrate?

Accepted Answer

Natural selection acting on heritable variation.

Question 8

Why can't natural selection act on all traits within a population?

Accepted Answer

Because only traits that are heritable can be acted upon by natural selection.

Question 9

Which of the following best explains why a trait that is adaptive in one environment may not remain adaptive if the environment changes?

Accepted Answer

Environmental changes can alter which traits are advantageous, making previously adaptive traits less beneficial.

Question 10

Which statement best distinguishes evolution from the fixed species concept?

Accepted Answer

Evolution proposes that species change over time, while the fixed species concept suggests species remain unchanged.

Question 11

A scientist observes that a population of finches on an island has developed larger beaks over several generations due to a change in available food sources. Which process is primarily responsible for this change?

Accepted Answer

Natural selection

Question 12

Which of the following is NOT a requirement for natural selection to occur?

Accepted Answer

All individuals must survive and reproduce equally

Question 13

If a population of bacteria is exposed to an antibiotic, and only those with a resistance gene survive and reproduce, what will likely happen to the frequency of the resistance gene in the next generation?

Accepted Answer

It will increase.

Question 14

Which of the following equations represents the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium for allele frequencies in a population?

Accepted Answer

$$p^2 + 2pq$$ + $$q^2 = 1$

Question 15

A population of birds is observed to have a change in wing length over several generations due to a new predator. Which of the following best explains this observation?

Accepted Answer

Natural selection favored birds with longer wings, leading to a change in population traits over time.

Question 16

Which of the following is an example of heritable variation?

Accepted Answer

A child inherits eye color from their parents.

Question 17

Why does evolution not work towards a specific end goal?

Accepted Answer

Because natural selection acts on existing variation without foresight, adapting populations to current environments.

Question 18

Which of the following best describes the relationship between unity and diversity in evolution?

Accepted Answer

Unity refers to the similarity among species due to common ancestry, while diversity refers to the differences that arise through adaptation and evolution.
