Question 1

Which of the following best describes the process of natural selection as outlined by Darwin's observations and inferences?

Accepted Answer

Individuals with heritable traits that increase survival and reproduction leave more offspring, leading to accumulation of favorable traits in the population.

Question 2

A population of beetles has a mean body length of 10 mm. After several generations of birds preying on the smallest beetles, the mean body length shifts to 12 mm. Which mode of selection is most likely responsible for this change?

Accepted Answer

Directional selection

Question 3

Which of the following is an example of a homologous structure?

Accepted Answer

The flipper of a whale and the human arm

Question 4

A scientist is comparing DNA sequences between two species and finds a high degree of similarity. What does this suggest about their evolutionary relationship?

Accepted Answer

They share a recent common ancestor.

Question 5

Which of the following equations correctly represents the calculation of variance for a sample of data?

Accepted Answer

$$s^2$$ = \frac{\sum (x_i - \overline{x}$$)^2$$}{n-1}$$

Question 6

In a chi-square test, if the calculated $$\$$chi^2$$ value is greater than the critical value from the chi-square table, what is the correct conclusion?

Accepted Answer

Reject the null hypothesis; there is a significant difference.

Question 7

Which of the following best explains why vestigial structures are important evidence for evolution?

Accepted Answer

They are homologous structures that are present but no longer serve their original function, indicating common ancestry.

Question 8

A researcher collects a sample of 25 measurements with a standard deviation $$s = 4. $$What is the standard error of the mean ($$SE_{\overline{x}}$$)?

Accepted Answer

$$SE_{\overline{x}} = \frac{4}{\sqrt{25}} = 0.8$$

Question 9

Which of the following scenarios is an example of allopatric speciation?

Accepted Answer

A river divides a population of rodents, and over time, the two groups become separate species.

Question 10

Which of the following statements about genetic drift is correct?

Accepted Answer

It is a random change in allele frequencies, especially significant in small populations.

Question 11

A population of birds has a bell-shaped curve for beak size. After several generations, only birds with very large or very small beaks are common, and intermediate beak sizes are rare. What type of selection has occurred?

Accepted Answer

Disruptive selection

Question 12

Which of the following is NOT a requirement for natural selection to occur in a population?

Accepted Answer

All individuals must survive and reproduce equally

Question 13

Which of the following best describes the difference between macroevolution and microevolution?

Accepted Answer

Macroevolution involves large-scale evolutionary changes over long periods, while microevolution involves small changes within a population over a few generations.

Question 14

Which of the following is an example of prezygotic reproductive isolation?

Accepted Answer

Two species of frogs breed at different times of the year.

Question 15

In a statistical analysis, what does a large standard deviation ($$s) $$indicate about the data set?

Accepted Answer

The data points are widely spread out from the mean.

Question 16

Which of the following best describes the biological species concept?

Accepted Answer

A group of organisms that can interbreed and produce viable, fertile offspring.

Question 17

Which of the following is a correct formula for the standard error of the mean?

Accepted Answer

$$SE_{\overline{x}} = \frac{s}{\sqrt{n}}$$

Question 18

Which of the following is an example of convergent evolution?

Accepted Answer

The wings of bats and the wings of birds, which evolved independently for flight.

Question 19

A researcher is constructing a cladogram. Which of the following is a correct guideline for building a cladogram?

Accepted Answer

Branches should always diverge into two, representing a single speciation event.
