Accepted Answer

$$\mathrm{C_6H_{12}O_6$ + 6O_2 \rightarrow 6CO_2 + 6H_2O + energy}$$

Question 7

A fungal species that grows on dead leaves and helps recycle nutrients is best described as a:

Accepted Answer

Decomposer

Question 8

Which of the following is a mutualistic relationship involving fungi and plant roots that enhances nutrient uptake?

Accepted Answer

Mycorrhizal symbiosis

Question 9

Endophytes are fungi that live inside plants and can:

Accepted Answer

Increase the plant's tolerance to stress and protect against pathogens.

Question 10

Which of the following is an example of a parasitic fungus that has had a significant impact on natural landscapes?

Accepted Answer

Chestnut blight fungus

Question 11

In the fungal life cycle, what is the result of karyogamy?

Accepted Answer

Fusion of two haploid nuclei to form a diploid zygote ($$2n)$$

Question 12

Which of the following best explains why fungi are important for nutrient cycling in forests?

Accepted Answer

They break down complex organic material, making nutrients available for plants and other organisms.

Question 13

A farmer notices that his cattle are healthier when grazing on grass infected with a certain fungus. What is the most likely explanation?

Accepted Answer

The fungus produces toxins that deter pests, protecting the grass and indirectly benefiting the cattle.

Question 14

Which of the following is a correct sequence of events in fungal sexual reproduction?

Accepted Answer

Plasmogamy $$\rightarrow$$ Karyogamy $$\rightarrow$$ Meiosis

Question 15

Which of the following best describes the role of fungi in biofuel production?

Accepted Answer

Fungi break down plant material, facilitating the conversion of biomass into biofuel.

Which of the following is NOT a function of mycorrhizal fungi in plant roots?

Accepted Answer

Fixing carbon dioxide into glucose for the plant.

Question 17

Which of the following best describes the relationship between leaf-cutter ants and fungi?

Accepted Answer

Ants farm fungi by feeding them leaves; fungi break down the leaves and ants eat the nutrient-rich hyphae.

Question 18

Which of the following statements about fungal spores is correct?
