Question 1

Which of the following best describes the process of natural selection as outlined in the study materials?

Accepted Answer

Natural selection is the differential survival and reproduction of individuals with heritable traits that are better suited to the environment.

Question 2

A population of insects is exposed to a pesticide. After several generations, most individuals are resistant to the pesticide. Which principle of natural selection does this scenario best illustrate?

Accepted Answer

Individuals with heritable traits that help them survive leave more offspring.

Question 3

Which statement about evolution is supported by the study materials?

Accepted Answer

Populations evolve, not individuals.

Question 4

In the context of natural selection, what is meant by 'heritable traits'?

Accepted Answer

Traits that are passed from parents to offspring through genes.

Question 5

Which of the following equations represents the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium for allele frequencies in a population?

Accepted Answer

$$p^2 + 2pq$$ + $$q^2 = 1$

Question 6

A population of birds has two alleles for beak size: B (large) and b (small). If the frequency of B is 0.6 and b is 0.4, what is the expected frequency of heterozygotes under Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium?

Accepted Answer

$$0.48$$

Question 7

Which of the following is NOT a requirement for natural selection to occur?

Accepted Answer

Unlimited resources in the environment.

Question 8

Why do adaptations not simply appear when needed by a population?

Accepted Answer

Adaptations are the result of random mutations and selection, not intentional changes.

Question 9

Which of the following best explains why not all offspring survive in a population?

Accepted Answer

Resources are limited, leading to competition and differential survival.

Question 10

A scientist observes that a population of moths changes color over several generations due to predation. What type of evolutionary change is this?

Accepted Answer

Microevolution

Question 11

Which of the following is an example of an adaptation?

Accepted Answer

A plant developing deeper roots over generations to access water.

Question 12

Which statement about the direction of evolution is supported by the study materials?

Accepted Answer

Evolution does not head toward a goal or perfection.

Question 13

In a population, the frequency of allele A is 0.7 and allele a is 0.3. What is the expected frequency of homozygous recessive individuals under Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium?

Accepted Answer

$$0.09$$

Question 14

Which of the following best describes the difference between microevolution and macroevolution?

Accepted Answer

Microevolution refers to changes within a single species over a few generations, while macroevolution refers to evolutionary changes over long time scales.

Question 15

Which of the following is a common misconception about natural selection?

Accepted Answer

Natural selection causes individuals to evolve during their lifetime.

Question 16

A population of bacteria is exposed to antibiotics. After several generations, most bacteria are resistant. What is the most likely explanation for this change?

Accepted Answer

Resistant bacteria survived and reproduced more than non-resistant bacteria.

Question 17

Which of the following statements about adaptations is correct?

Accepted Answer

Adaptations are characteristics that enhance survival and reproduction in specific environments.

Question 18

Which of the following is NOT true about the process of evolution?

Accepted Answer

Evolution always results in organisms becoming more complex.

Question 19

Why are 'good' or 'bad' traits dependent on the environment?

Accepted Answer

Because the fitness of a trait depends on how well it helps an organism survive and reproduce in its specific environment.

Question 20

Which of the following best explains why individuals do not evolve, but populations do?

Accepted Answer

Evolution involves changes in allele frequencies across generations within a population, not within an individual's lifetime.
