Question 1

Which of the following is considered a unifying theme in biology that explains both the unity and diversity of life?

Accepted Answer

Evolution

Question 2

A scientist observes that 85% of people involved in car accidents eat pickles. What can be concluded from this statistic?

Accepted Answer

There is a correlation between pickle eating and car accidents, but causation cannot be determined.

Question 3

Which of the following best describes an emergent property in biological systems?

Accepted Answer

A property that arises only when the parts of a system interact as a whole.

Question 4

Which statement about the scientific method is most accurate?

Accepted Answer

It involves making observations, forming hypotheses, and testing them, but the process can be non-linear.

Question 5

In an experiment, the group that does NOT receive the experimental treatment but is used for comparison is called the:

Accepted Answer

Control group

Question 6

Which of the following is NOT a characteristic commonly associated with living organisms?

Accepted Answer

Emergent properties

Question 7

A researcher wants to test if a new drug reduces blood pressure. She randomly assigns participants to receive either the drug or a placebo. What type of study is this?

Accepted Answer

Randomized controlled study

Question 8

Which of the following best illustrates the concept of 'the whole is greater than the sum of its parts' in biology?

Accepted Answer

A bicycle assembled from individual parts that cannot function alone

Question 9

Which equation best represents the central dogma of molecular biology?

Accepted Answer

$$DNA \rightarrow RNA \rightarrow Protein$$

Question 10

A scientist claims that reading to a fetus increases academic success later in life. What is the most scientifically valid way to test this claim?

Accepted Answer

Conduct a randomized controlled study assigning pregnant women to read or not read to their fetuses.

Question 11

Which of the following is a limitation of scientific inquiry?

Accepted Answer

Experimental evidence can lead to multiple interpretations.

Question 12

If a scientist tells only half the class a 'secret' to getting an A, and that half gets better grades, what is the most important factor to consider before concluding the secret helped?

Accepted Answer

Whether the groups were randomly assigned

Question 13

Which of the following best describes a placebo effect?

Accepted Answer

Improvement occurs even when patients believe they are being treated, regardless of actual treatment.

Question 14

Which of the following is an example of confirmation bias in science?

Accepted Answer

A scientist is more convinced by evidence that supports their preconceived notions.

Question 15

Which of the following is the smallest unit of organization that can perform all activities required for life?

Accepted Answer

Cell

Question 16

Which of the following is a consequence of biological organization?

Accepted Answer

Emergent properties arise as complexity increases.

Question 17

Which of the following is a reason why large sample sizes are important in experimental design?

Accepted Answer

They make results more meaningful and reliable.

Question 18

Which of the following is a real-world example of energy transformation in biological systems?

Accepted Answer

Plants converting sunlight into chemical energy during photosynthesis.

Question 19

Which of the following best describes the difference between a theory and a hypothesis in science?

Accepted Answer

A theory is a comprehensive explanation supported by evidence; a hypothesis is a testable possible explanation.

Question 20

Which of the following equations best represents the relationship between sample size ($$n) $$and reliability of experimental results?

Accepted Answer

$$	ext{Reliability} \propto n$$
