Q: Which equation would you use to estimate the heritability ($$h^2) of a $$trait from parent-offspring regression data?

$$h^2$$ = \text{slope of regression line}$$

Question 1

Which of the following best describes Darwin's first postulate of natural selection?

Accepted Answer

Variation exists in a trait among individuals in a population.

Question 2

In the case study of Galápagos finches, which postulate is supported by the observation that beak depth is correlated between parents and offspring?

Accepted Answer

Postulate 2: Some of the trait differences are heritable

Question 3

During a drought on Daphne Major, the average beak depth of finches increased. What is the most likely explanation for this change?

Accepted Answer

Finches with deeper beaks were more likely to survive and reproduce.

Question 4

Which equation would you use to estimate the heritability ($$h^2) of a $$trait from parent-offspring regression data?

Accepted Answer

$$h^2$$ = ext{slope of regression line}$$

Question 5

Which of the following is a misconception about natural selection?

Accepted Answer

Natural selection causes individuals to evolve during their lifetimes.

Question 6

If a population of beetles has both green and brown color morphs, and birds preferentially eat green beetles, which postulate does this scenario best illustrate?

Accepted Answer

Postulate 4: Survival and reproduction are not random

Question 7

Which gene is known to regulate beak shape in Galápagos finches?

Accepted Answer

ALX1

Question 8

A population of finches has a mixture of blunt (B) and pointed (P) beak alleles at the ALX1 gene. If drought conditions favor blunt beaks, what will happen to the allele frequencies over time?

Accepted Answer

The frequency of the B allele will increase.

Question 9

Which of the following statements about polygenic traits is correct?

Accepted Answer

Polygenic traits are influenced by many genes, each with a small effect.

Question 10

If all four of Darwin's postulates are met in a population, what is the expected outcome?

Accepted Answer

Evolution will occur in the population.

Question 11

Which of the following best explains why more offspring are produced than can survive?

Accepted Answer

To increase the likelihood that some individuals will possess advantageous traits.

Question 12

During a period of drought, the food supply for finches on Daphne Major decreased. Which evolutionary process is most likely to occur in response?

Accepted Answer

Natural selection will favor finches with traits that allow them to utilize the available food.

Question 13

Which of the following is NOT one of Darwin's four postulates?

Accepted Answer

All individuals survive and reproduce equally.

Question 14

A scientist observes that finches with larger beaks are more likely to survive during drought years. What type of selection is this an example of?

Accepted Answer

Directional selection

Question 15

Which formula best represents the change in allele frequency due to selection?

Accepted Answer

$$\Delta p = s p q$$

Question 16

Why is it important that trait differences are heritable for natural selection to occur?

Accepted Answer

Heritable traits can be passed to offspring, allowing advantageous traits to increase in frequency.

Question 17

Which of the following scenarios would NOT result in evolution by natural selection?

Accepted Answer

All individuals in a population have identical genotypes.

Question 18

If the average beak depth of a finch population increases after a drought, which evolutionary mechanism is most likely responsible?

Accepted Answer

Natural selection

Question 19

Which of the following best describes the connection between phenotype and genotype in the context of natural selection?

Accepted Answer

Natural selection acts on phenotypes, which are determined by genotypes.

Question 20

Which of the following is true about the process of evolution by natural selection?

Accepted Answer

It requires variation, heritability, differential survival, and non-random reproduction.
