Question 1

Which of the following is NOT a required condition for natural selection to occur in a population?

Accepted Answer

All individuals must reproduce at the same rate

Question 2

Why do populations living near the equator tend to have darker skin pigmentation?

Accepted Answer

Darker skin provides protection against folate degradation caused by intense UV radiation

Question 3

A population of light-skinned individuals migrates to a region with high UV radiation. Over several generations, what evolutionary change is most likely to occur?

Accepted Answer

Increase in frequency of alleles for darker skin due to selective pressure from UV radiation

Question 4

Which equation best represents the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium for a gene with two alleles, $$p$$ and $$q$$?

Accepted Answer

$$p^2 + 2pq$$ + $$q^2 = 1$

Question 5

Vitamin D deficiency is most likely to occur in which scenario?

Accepted Answer

Dark-skinned individuals living in low-UV regions

Question 6

Which of the following best explains the persistence of the sickle cell allele in populations where malaria is prevalent?

Accepted Answer

Heterozygotes have a survival advantage against malaria

Question 7

If a malaria eradication program is successful in a region, what is the expected long-term effect on the frequency of the sickle cell allele?

Accepted Answer

The frequency of the sickle cell allele will decrease

Question 8

Which of the following is an example of gene-culture coevolution?

Accepted Answer

Lactase persistence in populations with a history of dairy farming

Question 9

Why is lactase persistence considered a dominant trait?

Accepted Answer

One copy of the lactase persistence allele is sufficient for the phenotype

Question 10

A school introduces free milk to all students in a region with low lactase persistence. What is a likely negative outcome?

Accepted Answer

Increased rates of lactose intolerance symptoms among students

Question 11

Which of the following statements about skin color and intelligence is supported by scientific evidence?

Accepted Answer

There is no inherent biological link between skin color and intelligence

Question 12

In a population, the frequency of the sickle cell allele ($$S) is 0.15. $$What is the expected frequency of sickle cell homozygotes ($$SS) $$under Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium?

Accepted Answer

$$0.15^2 = 0.0225$

Question 13

Which real-world medical device may give biased readings due to differences in skin pigmentation?

Accepted Answer

Pulse oximeter

Question 14

Which of the following is a trade-off in the evolution of skin color?

Accepted Answer

Darker skin protects folate but may reduce vitamin D synthesis in low-UV environments

Question 15

Which scenario best illustrates balancing selection?

Accepted Answer

Persistence of both normal and sickle cell alleles in malaria-endemic regions

Question 16

A population of beach mice has two coat color alleles: light ($$L) $$and dark ($$D). If $$predation rates are higher for non-camouflaged mice, what will happen to allele frequencies over time?

Accepted Answer

Alleles matching the environment will increase in frequency due to natural selection

Question 17

Which of the following is a culturally sensitive way for clinicians to discuss lactose intolerance?

Accepted Answer

"Lactose intolerance is a normal genetic variation, not a defect."

Question 18

Which of the following best describes convergent evolution in the context of lactase persistence?

Accepted Answer

Multiple populations independently evolved lactase persistence due to similar selective pressures from dairy farming

Question 19

Which health condition is linked to vitamin D deficiency and influenced the evolution of skin color?

Accepted Answer

Defects in developing embryos

Question 20

Which of the following is an ethical consideration in genetic counseling for sickle cell disease?

Accepted Answer

Respecting patient autonomy and avoiding stigma
