Question 1

Which of the following best explains why most plants appear green to our eyes?

Accepted Answer

Chlorophyll reflects green light and absorbs blue and red light.

Question 2

During the light reactions of photosynthesis, what is the primary role of water?

Accepted Answer

To replace electrons lost by chlorophyll in photosystem II and release oxygen.

Question 3

Which of the following sequences correctly represents the flow of electrons during the light reactions?

Accepted Answer

Photosystem II → Electron Transport Chain → Photosystem I → NADPH

Question 4

A plant is exposed only to green light. What is the most likely effect on the rate of photosynthesis, and why?

Accepted Answer

The rate will decrease because green light is mostly reflected, not absorbed.

Question 5

Which enzyme catalyzes the first step of carbon fixation in the Calvin cycle?

Accepted Answer

Rubisco (ribulose-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase)

Question 6

What is the main function of ATP synthase in the thylakoid membrane during the light reactions?

Accepted Answer

To catalyze the synthesis of ATP from ADP and inorganic phosphate using a proton gradient.

Question 7

Which of the following best describes the role of NADPH in photosynthesis?

Accepted Answer

It is an energy carrier that donates electrons for the reduction of carbon dioxide in the Calvin cycle.

Question 8

If the thylakoid membrane is damaged, which process would be directly affected first?

Accepted Answer

The electron transport chain and ATP synthesis

Question 9

Which of the following is a direct product of the Calvin cycle that can be used to synthesize glucose?

Accepted Answer

Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate (G3P)

Question 10

A scientist measures the absorption spectrum of a plant pigment and finds it absorbs strongly at 450 nm and 680 nm. Which pigment is this most likely to be, and why?

Accepted Answer

Chlorophyll a, because it absorbs in the blue and red regions.

Question 11

Which of the following best describes chemiosmosis in the context of photosynthesis?

Accepted Answer

The flow of protons (H$$^+) $$down their concentration gradient through ATP synthase to generate ATP.

Question 12

If a plant's chlorophyll a molecules were unable to transfer electrons to the primary electron acceptor in photosystem II, what would be the immediate consequence?

Accepted Answer

No electrons would enter the electron transport chain, halting the light reactions.

Question 13

Which of the following equations correctly represents the overall process of photosynthesis?

Accepted Answer

$$6 \mathrm{CO}_2 + 6 \mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O} + 	ext{light energy}
ightarrow \mathrm{C}_6\mathrm{H}_{12}\mathrm{O}_6 + 6 \mathrm{O}_2$$

Question 14

Which of the following statements about the Calvin cycle is correct?

Accepted Answer

It uses ATP and NADPH produced by the light reactions to fix carbon dioxide.

Question 15

A mutation causes a plant to lack carotenoid pigments. Which of the following would most likely occur as a result?

Accepted Answer

The plant would be less efficient at absorbing blue and green light and more susceptible to damage from excess light.

Question 16

Which of the following best explains why the Calvin cycle is called a 'cycle'?

Accepted Answer

It begins and ends with the same five-carbon molecule, ribulose bisphosphate (RuBP).

Question 17

In a scenario where a plant is exposed to a chemical that blocks ATP synthase, which of the following would be the most immediate effect on photosynthesis?

Accepted Answer

The plant would be unable to generate ATP, halting the Calvin cycle.

Question 18

Which of the following is NOT a direct product of the light reactions of photosynthesis?

Accepted Answer

Glucose

Question 19

If a plant is placed in an environment with no carbon dioxide, which of the following processes would be directly affected first?

Accepted Answer

The Calvin cycle's carbon fixation step

Question 20

Which of the following best describes the fate of the majority of G3P molecules produced in the Calvin cycle?

Accepted Answer

They are used to regenerate RuBP, allowing the cycle to continue.
