Question 1

Which of the following best describes a phylogenetic tree?

Accepted Answer

A diagram that shows the evolutionary relationships among various biological species based on similarities and differences in their physical or genetic characteristics.

Question 2

In binomial nomenclature, which part of the scientific name is always capitalized?

Accepted Answer

The genus name

Question 3

A scientist discovers a new organism and wants to classify it. Which hierarchical level comes immediately above 'genus' in the classification system?

Accepted Answer

Family

Question 4

Which of the following statements about shared characteristics in phylogenetic trees is correct?

Accepted Answer

Shared characteristics are inherited from a common ancestor and are present in all descendants.

Question 5

If two species share a recent common ancestor, what can be inferred about their evolutionary relationship?

Accepted Answer

They are more closely related to each other than to species with a more distant common ancestor.

Question 6

Which of the following is the correct format for writing a scientific name using binomial nomenclature?

Accepted Answer

Genus species (italicized or underlined)

Question 7

A biologist is comparing DNA sequences between two lizard species. She finds that they share 95% of their DNA. What does this suggest about their evolutionary relationship?

Accepted Answer

They likely share a recent common ancestor.

Question 8

Which of the following best explains why scientific names are used instead of common names?

Accepted Answer

Scientific names provide a universal standard that avoids confusion caused by regional common names.

Question 9

Consider the following scenario: A phylogenetic tree shows that geckos and snakes share a more recent common ancestor with each other than with gloss lizards. What does this imply?

Accepted Answer

Geckos and snakes are more closely related to each other than either is to gloss lizards.

Question 10

Which of the following is NOT a correct statement about the use of phylogenetic trees?

Accepted Answer

Phylogenetic trees show the exact time when species diverged.

Question 11

A student is given the scientific name $$ Panthera leo . $$According to binomial nomenclature, what does 'leo' represent?

Accepted Answer

The species name

Question 12

Which of the following best describes a 'shared derived character' in the context of phylogenetic trees?

Accepted Answer

A trait that is present in an ancestor and all its descendants, but absent in more distant ancestors.

Question 13

Which of the following is the correct order of taxonomic hierarchy from most inclusive to least inclusive?

Accepted Answer

Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species

Question 14

A researcher is constructing a phylogenetic tree using both morphological and genetic data. Which of the following is a potential advantage of using genetic data?

Accepted Answer

Genetic data can reveal evolutionary relationships that are not apparent from morphology alone.

Question 15

If a group of organisms is classified as a 'clade' on a phylogenetic tree, what does this mean?

Accepted Answer

They include an ancestor and all of its descendants.

Question 16

Which of the following scenarios best illustrates the concept of convergent evolution in the context of phylogeny?

Accepted Answer

Two unrelated species develop similar traits due to similar environmental pressures.

Question 17

A scientist is analyzing a phylogenetic tree and notices that a certain trait appears in two separate branches that do not share a recent common ancestor. What is the most likely explanation?

Accepted Answer

The trait evolved independently in both lineages (convergent evolution).

Question 18

Which of the following is a correct application of binomial nomenclature in a real-world context?

Accepted Answer

Using $$ Homo sapiens to $$refer to humans in scientific literature worldwide.

Question 19

Which of the following best explains why evolutionary biologists use both morphological and molecular data to construct phylogenetic trees?

Accepted Answer

Combining both types of data provides a more accurate and comprehensive understanding of evolutionary relationships.

Question 20

A new species of lizard is discovered. Its scientific name is $$ Lizardus novus . $$According to the rules of binomial nomenclature, which of the following is true?

Accepted Answer

The genus is 'Lizardus' and the species is 'novus'.
