Question 1

Which of the following best describes the concept of 'phylogeny' in biology?

Accepted Answer

The evolutionary history and relationships among species or groups of organisms.

Question 2

Carolus Linnaeus is best known for which major contribution to biology?

Accepted Answer

Creating the system of binomial nomenclature for naming species.

Question 3

In the taxonomic hierarchy, which of the following correctly orders the ranks from most specific to most general?

Accepted Answer

Species, Genus, Family, Order, Class, Phylum, Kingdom, Domain

Question 4

Which of the following is an example of a shared derived character (synapomorphy) in mammals?

Accepted Answer

Production of milk

Question 5

A phylogenetic tree shows that frogs and lizards share a more recent common ancestor with each other than with fishes. What does this imply about their evolutionary relationship?

Accepted Answer

Frogs and lizards are more closely related to each other than to fishes.

Question 6

Which of the following best distinguishes homologous structures from analogous structures?

Accepted Answer

Homologous structures are similar due to shared ancestry, while analogous structures are similar due to convergent evolution.

Question 7

Which type of phylogenetic group includes an ancestral species and all of its descendants?

Accepted Answer

Clade (monophyletic group)

Question 8

Horizontal gene transfer complicates the construction of phylogenetic trees because:

Accepted Answer

It results in genes being transferred between unrelated species, obscuring true evolutionary relationships.

Question 9

Which of the following is the correct format for writing a species name using binomial nomenclature?

Accepted Answer

Genus species

Question 10

If a group contains species with wings from different evolutionary origins (e.g., bats, birds, insects), but does not include their most recent common ancestor, this group is:

Accepted Answer

Polyphyletic

Question 11

Which of the following statements about the use of molecular data in constructing phylogenetic trees is correct?

Accepted Answer

A closer match between DNA or protein sequences indicates a more recent common ancestor.

Question 12

Which of the following is a paraphyletic group?

Accepted Answer

A group containing reptiles but excluding birds, even though birds descended from reptiles.

Question 13

Which domain is most closely related to Eukarya according to modern phylogenies?

Accepted Answer

Archaea

Question 14

A basal taxon in a phylogenetic tree is defined as:

Accepted Answer

A group that diverges early and originates near the common ancestor of the group.

Question 15

Which of the following events is represented by a branch point (node) in a phylogenetic tree?

Accepted Answer

Speciation, where one lineage splits into two distinct lineages

Question 16

Which of the following is a shared ancestral character for mammals, amphibians, reptiles, and fish?

Accepted Answer

Presence of a hinged jaw

Question 17

If two species share a homologous structure, what does this indicate about their evolutionary relationship?

Accepted Answer

They inherited the structure from a common ancestor.

Question 18

Which of the following best explains why humans did NOT evolve from chimpanzees?

Accepted Answer

Humans and chimpanzees share a common ancestor but evolved along separate lineages.

Question 19

Which process can result in genes being transferred between distantly related species, complicating phylogenetic analysis?

Accepted Answer

Horizontal gene transfer

Question 20

Given the following DNA sequence similarity percentages between four species: Mouse-Chicken (80%), Mouse-Frog (85%), Mouse-Human (98%), Mouse-Chimp (99%), which species is most closely related to Mouse?

Accepted Answer

Chimp
