Question 1

Which of the following best describes the process of alternation of generations in land plants?

Accepted Answer

A haploid gametophyte produces gametes by mitosis, which fuse to form a diploid zygote that grows into a sporophyte.

Question 2

In the alternation of generations, what is the correct sequence of events starting from the gametophyte?

Accepted Answer

Gametophyte → mitosis → gametes → fertilization → zygote → mitosis → sporophyte → meiosis → spores

Question 3

Which of the following statements about the sporophyte generation in land plants is correct?

Accepted Answer

The sporophyte is diploid and produces haploid spores by meiosis.

Question 4

A mutation prevents meiosis in the sporophyte generation of a plant. Which of the following would be the most immediate consequence?

Accepted Answer

The plant would be unable to produce haploid spores.

Question 5

Which plant group is characterized by the presence of xylem and phloem but does not produce seeds?

Accepted Answer

Seedless vascular plants

Question 6

Which of the following is a key adaptation that allowed plants to colonize land?

Accepted Answer

Presence of cuticle to prevent water loss

Question 7

A botanist discovers a plant with the following characteristics: it has vascular tissue, produces seeds, but does not form flowers. To which group does this plant most likely belong?

Accepted Answer

Gymnosperms

Question 8

Which of the following correctly matches a plant group with a representative example?

Accepted Answer

Gymnosperms – Cycads

Question 9

In the life cycle of a typical fern, which structure is responsible for producing gametes?

Accepted Answer

Gametophyte

Question 10

Which of the following is true regarding the relationship between gametophytes and sporophytes in seed plants?

Accepted Answer

The sporophyte is the dominant generation, and the gametophyte is reduced and dependent on the sporophyte.

Question 11

Which of the following equations correctly represents the chromosome number changes during alternation of generations in plants?

Accepted Answer

$$2n \xrightarrow{meiosis} n \xrightarrow{mitosis} n \xrightarrow{fertilization} 2n$$

Question 12

A plant biologist is studying a moss. Which of the following statements about its life cycle is correct?

Accepted Answer

The gametophyte is the dominant, photosynthetic stage.

Question 13

Which of the following is NOT a characteristic of land plants?

Accepted Answer

Lack of multicellularity

Question 14

Which of the following plant groups includes both monocots and eudicots?

Accepted Answer

Angiosperms

Question 15

A plant produces haploid spores that develop into multicellular structures. What process allows these spores to grow into gametophytes?

Accepted Answer

Mitosis

Question 16

Which of the following is a correct pairing of plant group and a key feature?

Accepted Answer

Seedless vascular plants – independent gametophyte and sporophyte generations

Question 17

If a mutation caused a plant's spores to be diploid instead of haploid, which process in the life cycle would be directly affected?

Accepted Answer

Meiosis in the sporophyte

Question 18

Which of the following is a real-world example of alternation of generations in plants?

Accepted Answer

A pine tree (sporophyte) producing pollen grains (male gametophytes) that fertilize ovules to form seeds.
