Q: In a population, the frequency of allele $$A is$$ $$p = 0.7$$ and the frequency of allele $$a is$$ $$q = 0.3. $$According to Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, what is the expected frequency of heterozygotes ($$Aa$$)?

$$2pq = 2 \times 0.7 \times 0.3 = 0.42$$

Question 1

Which of the following best describes the process of natural selection as proposed by Charles Darwin?

Accepted Answer

It is an editing process that favors heritable traits already present in a population that fit the current environment.

Question 2

Why can't an individual organism evolve, according to the principles of evolution?

Accepted Answer

Because evolution involves changes in the genetic makeup of a population over time, not in individuals.

Question 3

Which of the following is NOT a requirement for a population to be in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium?

Accepted Answer

Non-random mating

Question 4

A population of insects is exposed to a new pesticide. After several generations, most of the population is resistant to the pesticide. Which evolutionary mechanism best explains this change?

Accepted Answer

Natural selection

Question 5

Which of the following is an example of a vestigial structure?

Accepted Answer

The human appendix, which has lost most of its original function

Question 6

Which equation represents the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium for allele frequencies in a population?

Accepted Answer

$$p^2 + 2pq$$ + $$q^2 = 1$

Question 7

Which of the following best explains why prokaryotes can evolve more quickly than eukaryotes?

Accepted Answer

Prokaryotes reproduce rapidly, allowing mutations to spread quickly through populations.

Question 8

Which of the following is the ultimate (original) source of genetic variation in a population?

Accepted Answer

Mutation

Question 9

A population of birds lives in an area where both very large and very small seeds are common, but medium-sized seeds are rare. Over time, birds with either very large or very small beaks become more common. What type of selection is this?

Accepted Answer

Disruptive selection

Question 10

Which of the following statements about artificial selection is correct?

Accepted Answer

Artificial selection is a process where humans select for desirable traits in organisms, providing evidence for how natural selection can operate.

Question 11

Which of the following is an example of homologous structures?

Accepted Answer

The forelimbs of a human, cat, whale, and bat

Question 12

Which of the following best describes the bottleneck effect?

Accepted Answer

A population is greatly reduced in size, leading to a loss of genetic diversity.

Question 13

Which of the following is NOT evidence supporting Darwin’s theory of evolution?

Accepted Answer

The presence of perfectly adapted organisms in every environment

Question 14

In a population, the frequency of allele $$A is$$ $$p = 0.7$$ and the frequency of allele $$a is$$ $$q = 0.3. $$According to Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, what is the expected frequency of heterozygotes ($$Aa$$)?

Accepted Answer

$$2pq = 2 imes 0.7 imes 0.3 = 0.42$$

Question 15

Which of the following best describes gene flow?

Accepted Answer

The movement of alleles between populations due to migration.

Question 16

Which of the following is an example of directional selection?

Accepted Answer

A population of moths shifts from mostly light-colored to mostly dark-colored due to pollution darkening tree bark.

Question 17

Which of the following is a molecular homology that supports the theory of evolution?

Accepted Answer

The presence of similar DNA sequences in humans and chimpanzees.

Question 18

Which of the following best explains why evolution does not lead to perfectly adapted organisms?

Accepted Answer

Natural selection can only act on existing heritable traits, and environments change over time.

Question 19

Which of the following is an example of intersexual selection?

Accepted Answer

Female peafowl choosing mates based on the size and color of the male's tail feathers.

Question 20

Which of the following statements about evolutionary trees is correct?

Accepted Answer

They show the evolutionary relationships among species based on shared homologies.
