Question 1

Which of the following best describes the difference between a scientific theory and the everyday use of the word 'theory'?

Accepted Answer

A scientific theory is a well-substantiated explanation based on evidence, while in everyday use, a theory often means a guess or assumption.

Question 2

Which of the following is NOT one of Darwin's four postulates of natural selection?

Accepted Answer

All individuals in a population survive and reproduce equally.

Question 3

A population of bacteria is exposed to an antibiotic. After several generations, most bacteria are resistant. Which postulate of natural selection does this scenario best illustrate?

Accepted Answer

Some individuals have traits that allow them to survive and reproduce more successfully.

Question 4

Which type of evidence best supports the idea that species are related by common ancestry?

Accepted Answer

Genetic homology, such as similar DNA sequences in different species.

Question 5

Which of the following statements about vestigial traits is correct?

Accepted Answer

Vestigial traits are evidence that species have changed over time.

Question 6

A student claims, 'Humans have stopped evolving because we are perfectly adapted.' What is the misconception in this statement?

Accepted Answer

Evolution is a process that continues as long as there is variation and selection, so humans can still evolve.

Question 7

Which of the following is an example of structural homology?

Accepted Answer

The similar bone structure in the forelimbs of whales, bats, and humans.

Question 8

In the case study of antibiotic resistance, what trait is under selection?

Accepted Answer

The ability to survive in the presence of antibiotics.

Question 9

Which of the following best explains why transitional features in fossils are important evidence for evolution?

Accepted Answer

They demonstrate intermediate forms between ancestral and modern species.

Question 10

A population of finches on the Galapagos Islands shows variation in beak size. During a drought, only finches with large beaks can crack the available seeds. Over time, the average beak size increases. Which evolutionary process does this scenario illustrate?

Accepted Answer

Natural selection.

Question 11

Which of the following is a correct application of Darwin's postulates to a real-world scenario?

Accepted Answer

Some individuals inherit traits that give them a reproductive advantage in a specific environment.

Question 12

Which of the following equations best represents the relationship between fitness, adaptation, and selection in a population?

Accepted Answer

$$Fitness = Reproductive\;Success$$

Question 13

Which of the following is an example of a common misconception about natural selection?

Accepted Answer

"Bacteria mutated so that they could survive the antibiotic."

Question 14

Why is understanding natural selection important for environmental sustainability?

Accepted Answer

It helps us understand how species adapt to changing environments, which is crucial for conservation efforts.

Question 15

Which of the following best describes genetic homology?

Accepted Answer

Similarities in DNA sequences among different species due to shared ancestry.

Question 16

A scientist observes that flowering plants are more diverse than mosses. Which statement best explains this observation in evolutionary terms?

Accepted Answer

Flowering plants have undergone more speciation events, leading to greater diversity.

Question 17

Which of the following is an example of direct observation as evidence for evolution?

Accepted Answer

The increase in frequency of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in hospitals.

Question 18

Which of the following best explains why extinction is important evidence for evolution?

Accepted Answer

It demonstrates that species can disappear, indicating that species are not fixed and can change over time.

Question 19

Which of the following is a correct prediction based on the null hypothesis in a study of natural selection?

Accepted Answer

There will be no difference in survival or reproduction among individuals with different traits.

Question 20

Which of the following best describes the process of adaptation in evolutionary biology?

Accepted Answer

A trait that increases an individual's fitness in a particular environment.
