Q: Which equation best represents the calculation of fitness in a population?

$$Fitness = \frac{\text{Number of offspring produced by individual}}{\text{Average number of offspring in population}}$$

Question 1

Which of the following best describes the scientific meaning of a 'theory' as used in evolutionary biology?

Accepted Answer

A theory is a well-supported explanation based on evidence and repeated testing.

Question 2

Which of the following is NOT one of Darwin’s four postulates of natural selection?

Accepted Answer

All individuals survive and reproduce equally.

Question 3

A population of bacteria is exposed to an antibiotic. Over time, most bacteria die, but a few survive and reproduce. Which evolutionary concept does this scenario best illustrate?

Accepted Answer

Natural selection

Question 4

Which type of evidence for evolution is best demonstrated by the presence of similar bone structures in the limbs of whales, bats, and humans?

Accepted Answer

Structural homology

Question 5

In the case study of Galapagos finches, what trait was under selection during the drought described in the study?

Accepted Answer

Beak size

Question 6

Which of the following statements is a common misconception about evolution?

Accepted Answer

"Humans have stopped evolving because we are perfectly adapted."

Question 7

Which equation best represents the calculation of fitness in a population?

Accepted Answer

$$Fitness = \frac{	ext{Number of offspring produced by individual}}{	ext{Average number of offspring in population}}$$

Question 8

Which of the following best explains why vestigial traits are considered evidence for evolution?

Accepted Answer

They indicate that species have changed over time, retaining structures that no longer serve a function.

Question 9

A scientist observes that two species share similar embryonic development patterns. What type of evolutionary evidence is this?

Accepted Answer

Developmental homology

Question 10

Which of the following scenarios best illustrates the concept of adaptation?

Accepted Answer

A population of moths develops darker coloration in response to pollution, increasing their survival.

Question 11

Which of the following is a prediction of the null hypothesis in a study of natural selection?

Accepted Answer

There will be no difference in trait frequency before and after selection.

Question 12

Which of the following is an example of direct observation as evidence for evolution?

Accepted Answer

Tracking changes in beak size in finches over several generations.

Question 13

Why is understanding natural selection important for environmental sustainability?

Accepted Answer

It helps predict how populations will respond to environmental changes, aiding conservation efforts.

Question 14

Which of the following best describes genetic homology?

Accepted Answer

Similar DNA sequences in different species due to shared ancestry.

Question 15

In a population of finches, some individuals have larger beaks and others have smaller beaks. If larger beaks increase survival during drought, which postulate of natural selection does this scenario illustrate?

Accepted Answer

Variation in traits exists among individuals.

Question 16

Which of the following is a misconception about how antibiotic resistance evolves in bacteria?

Accepted Answer

"The bacteria mutated so that they could survive the antibiotic."

Question 17

Which of the following is an example of a transitional feature in the fossil record?

Accepted Answer

A fossil showing both fish-like and amphibian-like characteristics.

Question 18

Which scientist is credited with proposing the first formal theory of evolution?

Accepted Answer

Jean-Baptiste Lamarck

Question 19

If a population of insects is exposed to a new pesticide and only those with a specific gene survive, what is likely to happen to the frequency of that gene in future generations?

Accepted Answer

The frequency of the gene will increase due to natural selection.

Question 20

Which of the following best explains the concept of population thinking promoted by Darwin?

Accepted Answer

Variation among individuals in a population is important for evolution.
