Q: If a student receives the following scores: 85% on Chapter Exams (300 pts), 90% on MyLab Assignments (100 pts), 80% on Activities (100 pts), and 75% on the Final Exam (200 pts), what is the student's total score out of 700 points?

$$0.85 \times 300 + 0.90 \times 100 + 0.80 \times 100 + 0.75 \times 200 = 255 + 90 + 80 + 150 = 575$$

Question 1

Accepted Answer

To develop a comprehensive overview of skills required to reason mathematically and model real-world situations using algebraic, graphical, and numerical methods.

Question 2

A student is using the MyLab Math online system for homework. According to the syllabus, what is the consequence if a student does not submit an assignment by the due date?

Accepted Answer

The assignment will not be accepted late and will receive a score of zero.

Question 3

Which of the following is NOT an expected student outcome for Math 119?

Accepted Answer

Use calculus to analyze rates of change.

Question 4

Suppose you are modeling the cost $$C (in $$dollars) of producing $$x$$ units of a product using the linear equation $$C = 50x + 200. $$What does the number 200 represent in this context?

Accepted Answer

The total cost when no units are produced (fixed cost).

Question 5

A student wants to use a graphing calculator during an exam. According to the syllabus, what is the policy regarding calculators?

Accepted Answer

Only standard scientific calculators are allowed; graphing calculators are not permitted.

Question 6

If a student receives the following scores: 85% on Chapter Exams (300 pts), 90% on MyLab Assignments (100 pts), 80% on Activities (100 pts), and 75% on the Final Exam (200 pts), what is the student's total score out of 700 points?

Accepted Answer

$$0.85 imes 300 + 0.90 imes 100 + 0.80 imes 100 + 0.75 imes 200 = 255 + 90 + 80 + 150 = 575$$

Question 7

Which of the following scenarios best illustrates the use of proportional reasoning as expected in Math 119?

Accepted Answer

Determining how doubling the ingredients in a recipe affects the total cost.

Question 8

A student is absent from class and misses an exam. According to the syllabus, what is the policy for making up missed exams?

Accepted Answer

Missed exams may only be made up if the absence is excused and arrangements are made in advance.

Question 9

Which of the following is an example of using mathematical modeling to solve a real-world problem, as emphasized in Math 119?

Accepted Answer

Using a linear equation to predict future sales based on past data.

Question 10

If a student is found to have copied answers from another student during an exam, which academic honesty policy has been violated?

Accepted Answer

Cheating during examinations

Question 11

A company’s revenue $$R (in $$dollars) is modeled by the equation $$R = 120x - 500$$, where $$x is $$the number of units sold. What is the minimum number of units that must be sold for the company to break even?

Accepted Answer

$$x = 5 ($$since $$120x - 500 = 0 \implies x = \frac{500}{120} \approx 4.17$$, so at least 5 units)$

Question 12

Which of the following best describes the role of critical thinking in mathematical reasoning, as outlined in the course outcomes?

Accepted Answer

Evaluating the validity of solutions and considering alternative approaches.
