Question 1

Which of the following best describes biogeography as evidence for evolution?

Accepted Answer

The study of the past and present geographical distribution of organisms.

Question 2

Why do the Galapagos Islands provide strong evidence for evolution, according to Darwin's observations?

Accepted Answer

They have unique species that closely resemble those on the nearest continental land mass, suggesting common ancestry and adaptation to new environments.

Question 3

Which of the following is an example of a homologous structure?

Accepted Answer

The wings of a bat and the arms of a human, which have similar bone arrangements but different functions.

Question 4

What is the significance of vestigial structures in the context of evolution?

Accepted Answer

They are non-functioning or marginally functioning structures that are remnants of features that were useful in ancestral species.

Question 5

Which of the following best explains why fossils of the same species can be found on different continents?

Accepted Answer

Plate tectonics caused continents to move apart after species had already spread across them.

Question 6

Which of the following is an example of a vestigial feature in humans?

Accepted Answer

The human appendix, which no longer serves its original digestive function.

Question 7

What is a pseudogene?

Accepted Answer

A gene that has undergone mutations and no longer serves a useful purpose.

Question 8

Which of the following statements about embryology provides evidence for evolution?

Accepted Answer

Embryos of all vertebrates possess a short bony tail and gill slits in early development, indicating common ancestry.

Question 9

According to Thomas Malthus, what limits the size of populations in nature?

Accepted Answer

The environment, particularly the food supply.

Question 10

Which of the following is an example of an analogous structure?

Accepted Answer

The eyes of an insect and the eyes of a bird, which serve similar functions but have different origins and structures.

Question 11

A population of rats is introduced to a remote island. Over time, the rat population thrives while many native bird species decline. What does this scenario best illustrate?

Accepted Answer

Competition for resources can lead to the decline or extinction of native species when new species are introduced.

Question 12

Which of the following best describes the relationship between homologous genes in different species?

Accepted Answer

The degree of similarity between homologous genes provides evidence for the degree of relatedness between species.

Question 13

Which of the following is NOT a source of evidence for evolution?

Accepted Answer

Astrology

Question 14

A scientist finds that whales have vestigial hip bones. What does this suggest about the evolutionary history of whales?

Accepted Answer

Whales evolved from ancestors that had hind limbs.

Question 15

Which of the following best explains why mammals and amphibians are rarely found as native species on remote oceanic islands?

Accepted Answer

They are unable to cross large expanses of open ocean to reach the islands.

Question 16

Which of the following scenarios best illustrates the concept of convergent evolution?

Accepted Answer

The development of wings in both bats (mammals) and insects, which serve similar functions but evolved independently.

Question 17

Which equation best represents the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium for a gene with two alleles, A and a?

Accepted Answer

$$p^2 + 2pq$$ + $$q^2 = 1$

Question 18

A population of animals is separated by a newly formed river, and over many generations, the two groups evolve into distinct species. What evolutionary process does this scenario describe?

Accepted Answer

Allopatric speciation

Question 19

Which of the following is a real-world example of a pseudogene in humans?

Accepted Answer

The defective GULO gene, which prevents humans from synthesizing vitamin C.

Question 20

Which of the following best describes the process by which new species arise on remote islands, according to Darwin's hypotheses?

Accepted Answer

Ancestral species arrive on the islands and, over time, evolve into new, geographically isolated species.
