Question 1

Which of the following best describes the concept of 'immutable species' as believed by early philosophers and religious experts?

Accepted Answer

Species are unable to change and were created in their present form.

Question 2

Comte Georges-Louis Leclerc de Buffon contributed to evolutionary thought by:

Accepted Answer

Suggesting that vestigial structures indicate species have changed from a more perfect form.

Question 3

Which of the following is an example of a vestigial structure?

Accepted Answer

The human appendix, which has little to no function.

Question 4

Erasmus Darwin, the grandfather of Charles Darwin, proposed which early evolutionary idea?

Accepted Answer

All life might have evolved from a single original source.

Question 5

Lamarck's first principle, 'use and disuse,' suggests that:

Accepted Answer

Structures used frequently become larger and stronger, while unused structures become smaller and weaker.

Question 6

According to Lamarck's second principle, 'inheritance of acquired characters,' which scenario would he have predicted?

Accepted Answer

A giraffe that stretches its neck during its lifetime will have offspring with longer necks.

Question 7

Why was Lamarck's theory of inheritance of acquired characteristics ultimately rejected?

Accepted Answer

Acquired traits do not alter DNA and are not heritable.

Question 8

Which of the following statements about fossil formation is correct?

Accepted Answer

Fossils are more likely to form in low-oxygen environments where decomposition is slowed.

Question 9

What is the main difference between Cuvier's theory of catastrophism and Lyell's theory of uniformitarianism?

Accepted Answer

Catastrophism emphasizes sudden, large-scale events, while uniformitarianism emphasizes slow, gradual change.

Question 10

A paleontologist finds a fossil of a complex organism near the top of a rock layer. According to Cuvier's observations, what does this suggest?

Accepted Answer

The organism lived more recently and is more likely to resemble living species.

Question 11

Which of the following best explains why aquatic animal fossils are more common than those of land animals?

Accepted Answer

Aquatic environments are more likely to provide the low-oxygen conditions needed for fossilization.

Question 12

Which of the following is NOT a condition that favors fossil formation?

Accepted Answer

High oxygen levels in the environment.

Question 13

Which scientist is credited with the first detailed studies of fossils and the development of catastrophism?

Accepted Answer

Georges Cuvier

Question 14

Which of the following statements is supported by the principle of uniformitarianism?

Accepted Answer

Geological processes occurring today have also occurred in the past at similar rates.

Question 15

A fossil is found more than a kilometer below the Earth's surface. What does this suggest about its age?

Accepted Answer

It is likely to be much older than fossils found near the surface.

Question 16

Which of the following equations best represents the gradual accumulation of sedimentary rock layers over time, as described by uniformitarianism?

Accepted Answer

$$d = r imes t$$

Question 17

If a paleontologist discovers marine fossils on a mountain, what does this indicate about the Earth's history?

Accepted Answer

The area was once underwater and geological processes have since uplifted it.

Question 18

Which of the following is a major flaw in Lamarck's theory of evolution?

Accepted Answer

It assumes that acquired traits can be inherited, which is not supported by genetic evidence.

Question 19

Which of the following best summarizes the main difference between Lamarck's and Darwin's explanations for evolutionary change?

Accepted Answer

Lamarck believed in inheritance of acquired traits, while Darwin proposed natural selection.

Question 20

Which of the following statements about the fossil record is true?

Accepted Answer

Most living species do not have fossils in the record.
