Q: How does the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) compute the unemployment rate?

$$\text{Unemployment Rate} = \frac{\text{Number of Unemployed}}{\text{Labor Force}} \times 100$$

Q: Given the following data from August 2024: 161,434,000 employed, 7,115,000 unemployed, and 100,306,000 not in the labor force, what is the labor force participation rate? (Round to two decimal places)

$$\text{Labor Force Participation Rate} = \frac{161,434,000 + 7,115,000}{161,434,000 + 7,115,000 + 100,306,000} \times 100 \approx 62.67\%$$

Q: Suppose the BLS reports the following: 10 people are employed, 2 are unemployed, and 3 are not in the labor force. What is the unemployment rate?

$$\text{Unemployment Rate} = \frac{2}{10+2} \times 100 = 16.67\%$$

Question 1

Which of the following is NOT one of the three categories used by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) to classify each adult (16 years of age and older) in the economy?

Accepted Answer

Discouraged worker

Question 2

How does the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) compute the unemployment rate?

Accepted Answer

$$	ext{Unemployment Rate} = \frac{	ext{Number of Unemployed}}{	ext{Labor Force}} imes 100$$

Question 3

Given the following data from August 2024: 161,434,000 employed, 7,115,000 unemployed, and 100,306,000 not in the labor force, what is the labor force participation rate? (Round to two decimal places)

Accepted Answer

$$	ext{Labor Force Participation Rate} = \frac{161,434,000 + 7,115,000}{161,434,000 + 7,115,000 + 100,306,000} imes 100 \approx 62.67\%$$

Question 4

Suppose the BLS reports the following: 10 people are employed, 2 are unemployed, and 3 are not in the labor force. What is the unemployment rate?

Accepted Answer

$$	ext{Unemployment Rate} = \frac{2}{10+2} imes 100 = 16.67\%$$

Question 5

Why might the unemployment rate fall even during a recession, as observed in some periods?

Accepted Answer

Because discouraged workers stop looking for work and exit the labor force, reducing the measured unemployment rate.

Question 6

According to the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), what is a key characteristic of the unemployment rate during and after recessions?

Accepted Answer

The unemployment rate peaks after the official end of the recession.

Question 7

If the labor force participation rate of men has gradually declined over the past six decades while that of women has increased, what is a likely explanation for this trend?

Accepted Answer

Social and economic changes have increased opportunities and incentives for women to join the labor force, while aging and changing preferences have reduced male participation.

Question 8

What is the formula for total output (Y) in a simple production function with constant returns to scale?

Accepted Answer

$$Y = F(K, L)$$

Question 9

In a competitive, profit-maximizing firm, how is the amount of each factor of production to demand determined?

Accepted Answer

By equating the marginal product of the factor to its real price.

Question 10

In the basic classical model of national income, which of the following is true at equilibrium?

Accepted Answer

Aggregate demand equals aggregate supply.

Question 11

Which assumption is necessary to derive the downward-sloping demand curves for labor and capital in the classical model?

Accepted Answer

Diminishing marginal product of each factor.

Question 12

Is it possible to have diminishing returns to a single factor of production and constant returns to scale at the same time? Why or why not?

Accepted Answer

Yes, because diminishing returns to a factor occur when increasing only that factor, while constant returns to scale refer to increasing all factors proportionally.

Question 13

Given the production function $$Y = 3K$$^{0.4}$$L^{0.6}$, does it exhibit diminishing returns to labor? Show your reasoning.

Accepted Answer

Yes, because the exponent on $$L is $$less than 1, so $$\frac{\$$partial^2$$ Y}{\partial L^2$} \u003c 0.$$

Question 14

Suppose a wave of immigration increases the labor force. According to the neoclassical theory of distribution, what is the likely effect on the real wage and the real rental price of capital?

Accepted Answer

The real wage falls and the real rental price of capital rises.

Question 15

If an earthquake destroys some of the capital stock in an economy, what is the likely effect on the marginal product of capital (MPK) and the real rental price of capital?

Accepted Answer

MPK rises and the real rental price of capital rises.

Question 16

A technological advance improves the production function. What is the likely effect on the real wage and the real rental price of capital?

Accepted Answer

Both the real wage and the real rental price of capital rise.

Question 17

If high inflation doubles the prices of all factors and outputs in the economy, what happens to real wages and real rental prices?

Accepted Answer

They remain unchanged, since both nominal wages and prices double.

Question 18

Suppose the labor force is 200 million, the number of employed is 180 million, and the working-age population is 300 million. What is the unemployment rate?

Accepted Answer

$$\frac{200 - 180}{200} imes 100 = 10\%$$

Question 19

If the labor force is 150 million and the working-age population is 250 million, what is the labor force participation rate?

Accepted Answer

$$\frac{150}{250} imes 100 = 60\%$$

Question 20

Which of the following best describes the economic intuition behind the unemployment rate peaking after the end of a recession?

Accepted Answer

Firms are slow to rehire workers even as output begins to recover, so unemployment remains high for a period after the recession ends.
