Q: What is the formula for calculating the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in a given year?

$$\frac{\text{cost of basket in current year}}{\text{cost of basket in base year}} \times 100$$

Q: If the cost of the CPI basket in 2023 (base year) is $$120, and in 2024 it is 150$$, what is the CPI for 2024?

$$\frac{150}{120} \times 100 = 125$$

Q: Suppose the CPI in 2024 is 125 and in 2025 it is 175. What is the inflation rate from 2024 to 2025?

$$\frac{175 - 125}{125} \times 100\% = 40\%$$

Q: If the minimum wage was $1.15 in 1964 (CPI = 31.0) and the CPI in 2024 is 313.7, what is the 1964 minimum wage in 2024 dollars?

$$1.15 \times \frac{313.7}{31.0} = 11.64$

Q: If the cost of the CPI basket in 2025 is $$210 and in 2024 it was 150$$, what is the percentage increase in the cost of the basket?

$$\frac{210 - 150}{150} \times 100\% = 40\%$$
