Question 1

Which of the following best explains the role of microbes in the oxygenation of Earth's atmosphere?

Accepted Answer

Microbes, particularly cyanobacteria, were critical for changing the atmosphere from anoxygenic to oxygenic, producing more than 70% of atmospheric oxygen.

Question 2

Which of the following statements about the human microbiome is correct?

Accepted Answer

Microbial cells in the human body outnumber human cells by approximately 10 to 1.

Question 3

Which of the following is NOT a function of microbes in the environment?

Accepted Answer

Producing all of the Earth's nitrogen gas directly.

Question 4

Which of the following best describes the difference between prokaryotes and eukaryotes?

Accepted Answer

Prokaryotes lack a membrane-bound nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles, while eukaryotes possess both.

Question 5

Which scientist is credited with disproving the theory of spontaneous generation using the swan-neck flask experiment?

Accepted Answer

Louis Pasteur

Question 6

Which of the following is a correct statement about viruses?

Accepted Answer

Viruses are obligate intracellular parasites that contain either DNA or RNA surrounded by a protein coat.

Question 7

Which of the following best describes the contribution of Alexander Fleming to microbiology?

Accepted Answer

He observed that a species of Penicillium killed bacterial cells, leading to the development of penicillin.

Question 8

Which of the following equations best represents the process of oxygenic photosynthesis carried out by cyanobacteria?

Accepted Answer

$$6CO_2 + 6H_2O \rightarrow C_6H_{12}O_6$ + 6O_2$$

Question 9

Which of the following is a key difference between bacteria and archaea?

Accepted Answer

Bacteria have cell walls made of peptidoglycan, while archaea have distinct cell wall compositions and are not pathogenic.

Question 10

Which of the following best describes Koch's postulates?

Accepted Answer

A set of criteria used to determine if a specific microbe causes a specific disease.

Question 11

Which of the following best explains the importance of Ignaz Semmelweis's work in microbiology?

Accepted Answer

He determined the source of puerperal fever and introduced handwashing to reduce mortality in childbirth.

Question 12

Which of the following is a correct statement about the universal phylogenetic tree of life?

Accepted Answer

It is based on the comparison of small subunit rRNA sequences.

Question 13

Which of the following best describes the process and significance of fermentation as studied by Pasteur?

Accepted Answer

Fermentation is a process caused by living microorganisms, not by air, and is essential for the production of products like wine and beer.

Question 14

Which of the following best explains why viruses are not considered living organisms?

Accepted Answer

They cannot reproduce independently and require a host cell for replication.

Question 15

Which of the following best describes the contribution of Paul Ehrlich to microbiology?

Accepted Answer

He developed Salvarsan, a chemical used to treat syphilis, and pioneered the concept of 'magic bullets' in chemotherapy.

Question 16

Which of the following is a correct statement about the classification of prokaryotes?

Accepted Answer

Prokaryotes are classified into two domains: Bacteria and Archaea.

Question 17

Which of the following best describes the role of microbes in the carbon and nitrogen cycles?

Accepted Answer

Microbes regulate the cycling of carbon and nitrogen in the environment through processes involving $$CO_2$$, $$N_2O$$, and $$CH_4.$$

Question 18

Which of the following best explains why handwashing and antiseptic techniques are important in healthcare settings?

Accepted Answer

They prevent the spread of infectious diseases by removing or killing microbes on hands and surfaces.

Question 19

Which of the following best describes the relationship between microbes and food webs in the ocean?

Accepted Answer

Microbes are the primary producers at the base of oceanic food webs.
