Question 1

According to the definition of validity provided, which of the following best describes a valid argument?

Accepted Answer

An argument is valid if and only if there is no logically possible situation where all the premises are true and the conclusion is false at the same time. $$	ext{Valid} \iff
eg \exists S: (	ext{All Premises True in } S) \land (	ext{Conclusion False in } S)$$

Question 2

Which of the following arguments is an example of a circular argument?

Accepted Answer

God exists. Therefore, God exists.

Question 3

Which of the following statements about validity is correct?

Accepted Answer

An argument can be valid even if its premises are false.

Question 4

Consider the following argument: 'The moon is made of cheese. Therefore, Paris is the capital of France.' According to the definition of validity, is this argument valid?

Accepted Answer

Yes, because there is no logically possible situation where the premise is true and the conclusion is false.

Question 5

Which of the following best illustrates the concept of 'necessarily true conclusions' in valid arguments?

Accepted Answer

1 + 1 = 3. Therefore, if God exists, then God exists.

Question 6

Which of the following is NOT a requirement for an argument to be valid?

Accepted Answer

The premises must be true in reality.

Question 7

Suppose an argument has inconsistent premises (i.e., it is impossible for all the premises to be true at the same time). What does the definition of validity say about such an argument?

Accepted Answer

The argument is valid, because there is no possible situation where all the premises are true and the conclusion is false.

Question 8

Which of the following arguments is valid, according to the definition provided?

Accepted Answer

All triangles have three sides. All pigs have four legs. Therefore, all squares have four sides.

Question 9

Which of the following best explains why circular arguments are always valid?

Accepted Answer

Because the conclusion is identical to a premise, so it is impossible for the premises to be true and the conclusion false at the same time.

Question 10

Which of the following is an example of an argument that is valid but not sound?

Accepted Answer

All cats are reptiles. All reptiles can fly. Therefore, all cats can fly.

Question 11

If an argument is valid and all its premises are true, what can we conclude about its conclusion?

Accepted Answer

The conclusion must also be true.

Question 12

Which of the following best describes the relationship between validity and soundness?

Accepted Answer

A sound argument is both valid and has all true premises.

Question 13

Consider the following argument: 'If Paris is in France, then Paris is in Europe. Paris is in France. Therefore, Paris is in Europe.' Is this argument valid?

Accepted Answer

Yes, because the logical structure guarantees the conclusion if the premises are true.

Question 14

Which of the following is a common misconception about validity?

Accepted Answer

That a valid argument must have true premises and a true conclusion.

Question 15

Suppose you are evaluating an argument with the following structure: 'If A, then B. A. Therefore, B.' Which logical form does this represent?

Accepted Answer

Modus ponens: $$\begin{align*} &A \implies B \ &A \ &	herefore B \end{align*}$$

Question 16

Which of the following arguments is invalid?

Accepted Answer
