Q: Which formula is used to estimate 'time to contact' (tau) based on the size and velocity of an object's image on the retina?

$$ \tau = \frac{\text{size of image (on retina)}}{\text{velocity of expansion of image (on retina)}} $$

Question 1

Which of the following best describes 'Discrimination Reaction Time' (DRT)?

Accepted Answer

The reaction time when there are multiple signals, but only one response to only one of the signals, while other signals require no response.

Question 2

In a volleyball scenario, an attacker must decide to spike or tip based on the defenders' actions. If the defenders jump asynchronously, making their heights more similar, how does this affect the attacker's discrimination reaction time (DRT)?

Accepted Answer

The DRT will increase because it takes more time to perceive smaller differences between similar stimuli.

Question 3

Which of the following is an example of a 'choice reaction time' task?

Accepted Answer

Pressing a specific button for red, another for blue, and another for green lights.

Question 4

According to Crossman’s Confusion Function, what happens to discrimination reaction time (DRT) as the similarity between two stimuli increases?

Accepted Answer

DRT increases because it takes longer to discriminate between similar stimuli.

Question 5

Which formula is used to estimate 'time to contact' (tau) based on the size and velocity of an object's image on the retina?

Accepted Answer

$$ au = \frac{	ext{size of image (on retina)}}{	ext{velocity of expansion of image (on retina)}} $$

Question 6

A baseball outfielder uses visual cues to determine where and when a fly ball will land. Which perceptual process is MOST critical for this task?

Accepted Answer

Dynamic visual acuity to track the moving ball.

Question 7

Which of the following best explains why experienced drivers are better at using the optical flow field than novice drivers?

Accepted Answer

Experienced drivers have learned to use expansion, contraction, and motion cues efficiently.

Question 8

In the context of pattern recognition, what distinguishes an expert from a novice in a sport?

Accepted Answer

Experts have a deep understanding of meaningful patterns and features relevant to the sport, stored in long-term memory.

Question 9

Which of the following statements about visual acuity is TRUE?

Accepted Answer

Dynamic visual acuity is the ability to distinguish details of moving objects.

Question 10

A driver approaches a stationary car at an intersection. To avoid a collision, the driver must estimate the time to contact. Which variable is most directly used in this estimation?

Accepted Answer

The angular size and its rate of expansion on the retina.

Question 11

Which of the following best describes the role of long-term memory (LTM) in expert pattern recognition?

Accepted Answer

LTM allows experts to flexibly retrieve important patterns quickly, bypassing slower information processing.

Question 12

Which of the following scenarios best illustrates the use of the optical flow field in real life?

Accepted Answer

A cyclist judging their speed and direction by observing the movement of objects in their peripheral vision.

Question 13

If a performer is given more time to respond in a discrimination reaction time (DRT) task, what is the expected effect on their accuracy?

Accepted Answer

Accuracy will increase, assuming sufficient time is provided.

Question 14

Which of the following is NOT a factor that influences reaction time in perceptual-motor tasks?

Accepted Answer

The color of the performer's clothing.

Question 15

A beginner learning to drive must both physically operate the car and learn to discern relevant cues in traffic. According to the lecture, what is the best approach to teaching these skills?

Accepted Answer

Teach both physical and perceptual skills together, but ensure the learner attains reasonable accuracy before focusing on speed.

Question 16

Which of the following best describes the relationship between the degree of discriminability of two stimuli and the information content (in bits) according to Crossman’s Confusion Function?

Accepted Answer

As discriminability increases, information content increases.

Question 17

Which of the following is an example of pattern recognition in a real-world context?

Accepted Answer

A chess master instantly recognizing a familiar board configuration.

Question 18

In the context of time to contact (tau), what does it mean if the ratio of the fielder's arrival time to the ball's arrival time is less than 1?

Accepted Answer

The ball will land in front of the fielder.
