Question 1

Which of the following best describes the concept of 'criterion' in Signal Detection Theory?

Accepted Answer

The observer's threshold for deciding whether a signal is present or absent.

Question 2

In Signal Detection Theory, what does the variable $$d' (d-$$prime) represent?

Accepted Answer

The perceptual sensitivity or ability to distinguish signal from noise.

Question 3

An umpire calls a pitch a 'strike' even though it was outside the strike zone. According to Signal Detection Theory, this is an example of:

Accepted Answer

A false alarm

Question 4

If an observer sets a very strict criterion in a signal detection task, what is the most likely outcome?

Accepted Answer

Low hit rate and low false alarm rate

Question 5

Which formula correctly expresses perceptual sensitivity ($$d') in $$Signal Detection Theory?

Accepted Answer

$$d' = \frac{\mu_{signal} - \mu_{noise}}{\sigma}$$

Question 6

In a motor learning context, why is distinguishing 'signal' from 'noise' important?

Accepted Answer

It helps the performer focus on relevant cues and improve accuracy.

Question 7

Which outcome in Signal Detection Theory is considered a Type II error?

Accepted Answer

Miss

Question 8

If an expert and a novice have the same $$d'$$ but the expert has a more lax criterion ($$\beta$$), what is the likely result?

Accepted Answer

The expert will have more hits and more false alarms.

Question 9

Which of the following best describes a 'correct negative' in Signal Detection Theory?

Accepted Answer

The observer correctly identifies that no signal is present.

Question 10

A radar operator is under pressure to detect enemy planes. If the operator shifts their criterion to be more lax, what is the expected change in outcomes?

Accepted Answer

Increase in hits and increase in false alarms.

Question 11

Which variable in Signal Detection Theory reflects the observer's decision bias?

Accepted Answer

$$\beta$$

Question 12

In the context of driving, which scenario best illustrates a 'miss' according to Signal Detection Theory?

Accepted Answer

A driver fails to notice a pedestrian crossing.

Question 13

Which of the following is NOT a possible outcome in Signal Detection Theory?

Accepted Answer

True positive

Question 14

If the distributions of 'noise' and 'signal + noise' overlap significantly, what does this imply about $$d'$$?

Accepted Answer

$$d' is $$low, indicating low sensitivity.

Question 15

Which real-world scenario best illustrates the application of Signal Detection Theory?

Accepted Answer

A radiologist deciding if a shadow on an X-ray is a tumor or not.

Question 16

What is the effect of increasing perceptual sensitivity ($$d') in a $$detection task?

Accepted Answer

More correct decisions (hits and correct negatives) and fewer errors (misses and false alarms).

Question 17

Which equation represents the calculation of $$\beta ($$criterion) in Signal Detection Theory?

Accepted Answer

$$\beta = \frac{f_{signal}(criterion)}{f_{noise}(criterion)}$$

Question 18

In a scenario where the cost of missing a signal is very high (e.g., failing to detect a fire alarm), what criterion shift is most likely?

Accepted Answer

The observer will adopt a more lax criterion.

Question 19

Which of the following factors can influence an observer's criterion ($$\beta) in $$Signal Detection Theory?

Accepted Answer

Expectancies and the rewards/penalties associated with decisions.

Question 20

A novice and an expert are both performing a signal detection task. If the expert has a higher $$d'$$ but the same criterion as the novice, what is the expected difference?

Accepted Answer

The expert will make more correct decisions (hits and correct negatives).
