Question 1

Which of the following best describes the scientific method as used in physics?

Accepted Answer

A process involving observations, forming hypotheses, making predictions, and conducting experiments.

Question 2

Which of the following statements about scientific laws and theories is correct?

Accepted Answer

A scientific law is a well-tested hypothesis that has not been contradicted, while a theory is a large body of well-tested and verified hypotheses.

Question 3

Which of the following is an example of a scientific law?

Accepted Answer

Newton's laws of motion

Question 4

Why is it important for a scientific hypothesis to be falsifiable?

Accepted Answer

So it can be tested and potentially proven wrong by experiments or observations.

Question 5

Which of the following best illustrates the open nature of science?

Accepted Answer

The shift from the Ptolemaic model to the Copernican model of the solar system after new evidence was found.

Question 6

A student claims that a new type of energy exists that cannot be detected or measured in any way. According to the scientific method, what is the main problem with this claim?

Accepted Answer

It is not falsifiable and cannot be tested by experiments or observations.

Question 7

Which of the following is NOT a step in the scientific method as described in the study materials?

Accepted Answer

Ignoring results that do not support the hypothesis.

Question 8

Which of the following best describes the difference between a hypothesis and a theory in science?

Accepted Answer

A hypothesis is a tentative explanation that can be tested, while a theory is a well-supported and widely accepted explanation.

Question 9

Which of the following real-world scenarios best demonstrates the application of the scientific method?

Accepted Answer

A medical researcher observes a new disease, forms a hypothesis about its cause, predicts how it spreads, and tests the prediction with experiments.

Question 10

If a scientific theory is contradicted by new experimental evidence, what should happen according to the scientific attitude described in the study materials?

Accepted Answer

The theory should be revised or rejected in light of the new evidence.

Question 11

Which of the following is a key characteristic of science, as defined in the study materials?

Accepted Answer

It is a systematic exploration of how our universe works using observations, hypotheses, predictions, and experiments.

Question 12

Which of the following best explains why Newton's laws of motion are considered scientific laws?

Accepted Answer

They are well-tested hypotheses that have not been contradicted by experiments.

Question 13

A scientist observes that a certain plant grows faster in red light than in blue light. She proposes that red light increases the rate of photosynthesis. What is her next step according to the scientific method?

Accepted Answer

Design an experiment to test whether red light increases the rate of photosynthesis.

Question 14

Which of the following statements about the transition from the Ptolemaic to the Copernican model of the solar system is correct?

Accepted Answer

It demonstrates how scientific understanding changes with new evidence and observations.

Question 15

Which of the following is an example of a falsifiable hypothesis?

Accepted Answer

"If a ball is dropped from a height, it will accelerate towards the ground at $$9.8\ \mathrm{m/s^2$} on $$Earth."

Question 16

A student claims that a new drug cures headaches. To scientifically test this claim, which of the following steps should be taken first?

Accepted Answer

Formulate a hypothesis and design an experiment to test the drug's effectiveness.

Question 17

Which of the following best describes the role of predictions in the scientific method?

Accepted Answer

Predictions are logical deductions based on hypotheses that can be tested by experiments.

Question 18

Which of the following is a real-world example of a scientific theory?

Accepted Answer

The theory of relativity

Question 19

Why is it important for scientists to be willing to admit when a hypothesis is wrong?

Accepted Answer

Because science relies on evidence and the willingness to revise ideas based on new data.

Question 20

Which of the following best describes the main focus of conceptual physics as presented in the course materials?

Accepted Answer

Understanding the world using basic concepts of physics without relying on advanced mathematics.
