Question 1

Which of the following best describes the difference between descriptive and inferential statistics?

Accepted Answer

Descriptive statistics summarize and describe data, while inferential statistics use data to make predictions or test hypotheses about populations.

Question 2

A researcher wants to know if there is a difference in reaction time between students who study in a loud room and those who study in a quiet room. What is the independent variable (IV) in this study?

Accepted Answer

The type of room (loud vs. quiet)

Question 3

Which scale of measurement allows for meaningful zero and the calculation of proportions, such as 'twice as much'?

Accepted Answer

Ratio scale

Question 4

If a bathroom scale consistently reads 2 kg heavier than the true weight, what type of measurement error is this?

Accepted Answer

Systematic error

Question 5

Which formula correctly represents the relationship between observed score, true score, and error in measurement?

Accepted Answer

$$X_o = X + X_e$$

Question 6

A researcher classifies participants as 'young' if they are under 50 years old and 'old' if they are 50 or older. What scale of measurement is being used?

Accepted Answer

Nominal scale

Question 7

Which of the following is an example of an ordinal scale?

Accepted Answer

Olympic medals: gold, silver, bronze

A subset of individuals selected from a population to represent that population.

Question 9

Which type of error is most likely to average out over many measurements?

Accepted Answer

Random error

Question 10

They have a true zero point.

Question 12

In a study, the dependent variable (DV) is best described as:

Accepted Answer

The outcome or behavior measured in response to changes in the independent variable.

Question 13

Question 14

A researcher measures temperature in Fahrenheit. What scale of measurement is being used?

Accepted Answer

Interval scale

Question 15

Which of the following statements about measurement error is TRUE?

Accepted Answer

Systematic errors are consistent and affect all measurements in the same way.

Question 16

If a researcher wants to know whether cats believe they disappear when they close their eyes, what is the first step in designing the study?

Accepted Answer

Formulating a clear research question

Question 17

Which of the following best illustrates the concept of operational definition?

Accepted Answer

Defining reaction time as the number of milliseconds from the start signal to when a racer crosses the finish line.

Question 18

Which of the following is a correct example of a nominal variable?

Accepted Answer

Country of birth: Canada, United States, China

Question 19

A researcher finds that a weak spring in a scale causes the error to increase as the weight increases. What type of error is this?

Accepted Answer

Proportional error
