Question 1

Which of the following best describes the concept of selective adaptation in the visual system?

Accepted Answer

Neurons become less sensitive to a specific property after prolonged exposure, resulting in decreased firing rate and reduced response to that property.

Question 2

In a psychophysical experiment measuring the effect of selective adaptation to orientation, what is the primary variable being measured?

Accepted Answer

The contrast threshold, defined as the minimum intensity difference between adjacent bars that can just be detected.

Question 3

After adapting to a high-contrast vertical grating, what change would you expect in the contrast threshold for vertical orientations?

Accepted Answer

The contrast threshold for vertical orientations increases, making it harder to see low-contrast vertical gratings.

Question 4

Which equation correctly represents the calculation of contrast threshold $$C$$ for a grating stimulus?

Accepted Answer

$$C = \frac{I_{max} - I_{min}}{I_{max} + I_{min}}$$

Question 5

Selective adaptation is considered 'selective' because:

Accepted Answer

Only neurons that were actively responding to the adapting stimulus show decreased sensitivity.

Question 6

In the selective rearing experiment by Blakemore and Cooper (1970), kittens reared in an environment with only vertical stripes showed which of the following outcomes?

Accepted Answer

They responded predominantly to vertical stimuli and were largely unresponsive to horizontal stimuli.

Question 7

What phenomenon explains why neurons in the visual cortex can change their response properties based on perceptual experience, as seen in selective rearing experiments?

Accepted Answer

Neural plasticity or experience-dependent plasticity.

Question 8

How does the duration of exposure differ between selective adaptation and selective rearing experiments?

Accepted Answer

Selective adaptation is short-term (minutes), while selective rearing is long-term (days to weeks).

Question 9

Which of the following best illustrates the principle of 'use it or lose it' in the context of visual cortex development?

Accepted Answer

Neurons that are not stimulated by a particular orientation during development lose their ability to respond to that orientation.

Question 10

Why does the psychophysical curve for selective adaptation appear slightly wider than the orientation tuning curve for a single cortical neuron?

Accepted Answer

Because the adapting stimulus affects some neurons that respond to orientations near the adapting orientation.

Question 11

What does the near match between the orientation selectivity of neurons and the perceptual effect of selective adaptation suggest?

Accepted Answer

Feature detectors in the visual cortex play a role in perception.

Question 12

If a person adapts to a high-contrast grating at $$0^{\circ} ($$vertical), what would you expect to happen to their ability to detect low-contrast gratings at $$0^{\circ}$$ compared to $$45^{\circ}$$?

Accepted Answer

Detection of low-contrast gratings at $$0^{\circ}$$ becomes more difficult than at $$45^{\circ}.$$

Question 13

Which real-world scenario best demonstrates the role of feature detectors in perception, as supported by selective adaptation experiments?

Accepted Answer

Navigating a crowded shopping mall, where neurons responding to the orientations of objects help construct your perception of the scene.

Question 14

In the context of selective adaptation, which neurons are most likely to adapt?

Accepted Answer

Neurons that were actively responding to the presented orientation.

Question 15

What is the main difference in the effect of adaptation versus selective rearing on neurons responding to a specific orientation?

Accepted Answer

Adaptation temporarily decreases response, while selective rearing leads to long-term changes in responsiveness.

Question 16

Which of the following statements about the oblique effect is supported by research on feature detectors?

Accepted Answer

Humans perceive vertical and horizontal lines better than slanted lines, and the brain's response to horizontals and verticals is stronger.

Question 17

A kitten reared in an environment with only horizontal stripes is later tested with vertical and horizontal rods. What behavior would you expect?

Accepted Answer

The kitten pays attention to horizontal rods but ignores vertical rods.

Question 18

Which experimental result provides evidence that feature detectors are involved in the perception of orientation?

Accepted Answer

The parallel between the orientation selectivity of neurons in the cat's cortex and the cat's behavioral response to the same orientation.
