Q: Which equation best represents the effect of negative reinforcement on the frequency of a behavior?

$$\text{Future Frequency} = \text{Baseline Frequency} + \Delta_{NR}$$

Question 1

Which of the following best describes negative reinforcement?

Accepted Answer

A response produces the termination, reduction, postponement, or avoidance of a stimulus, increasing the future occurrence of similar responses.

Question 2

A student turns off their alarm clock in the morning to stop the loud ringing. This is an example of:

Accepted Answer

Negative reinforcement

Question 3

In the three-term escape contingency, what is the correct sequence of events?

Accepted Answer

$$EO \rightarrow SD \rightarrow R \rightarrow SR$$^{-}$$

Question 4

Which of the following scenarios best illustrates the four-term (avoidance) contingency?

Accepted Answer

A person leaves a party early to avoid an awkward conversation.

Question 5

What is the main distinction between negative reinforcement and punishment?

Accepted Answer

Negative reinforcement increases behavior by removing a stimulus; punishment decreases behavior by presenting or removing a stimulus.

Question 6

Which of the following is NOT a characteristic of effective negative reinforcement?

Accepted Answer

The stimulus change occurs long after the target response.

Question 7

A child throws a tantrum to escape eating vegetables, and the parent removes the vegetables. What is likely to happen to the tantrum behavior in the future?

Accepted Answer

The tantrum behavior will increase due to negative reinforcement.

Question 8

Which equation best represents the effect of negative reinforcement on the frequency of a behavior?

Accepted Answer

$$	ext{Future Frequency} = ext{Baseline Frequency} + \Delta_{NR}$$

Question 9

Which of the following is an example of an establishing operation (EO) in an escape contingency?

Accepted Answer

A loud noise that makes escape more reinforcing.

Question 10

A teacher allows a student to choose the order of tasks to complete. According to research, what is the likely effect on the aversiveness of demand situations?

Accepted Answer

The aversiveness is reduced, making escape less likely.

Question 11

Which of the following best illustrates the difference between escape and avoidance contingencies?

Accepted Answer

Escape involves terminating an ongoing aversive stimulus; avoidance involves preventing the aversive stimulus from occurring.

Question 12

Which of the following is a potential ethical concern when using negative reinforcement in behavior change programs?

Accepted Answer

The presence of aversive stimuli can generate competing behaviors and undesirable side effects.

Question 13

A caregiver removes a demand after a child engages in aggression. What is the likely effect on both the child's and caregiver's behavior?

Accepted Answer

Aggression is negatively reinforced for the child, and escape is negatively reinforced for the caregiver.

Question 14

Which of the following is NOT a behavioral replacement strategy for escape-maintained problem behavior?

Accepted Answer

Increasing the aversiveness of the demand situation.

Question 15

In a classroom, a student frequently asks to go to the nurse to avoid a difficult test. The teacher allows it. What is the likely long-term effect?

Accepted Answer

The student's requests to go to the nurse will increase.

Question 16

Which of the following statements is TRUE regarding the effectiveness of negative reinforcement?

Accepted Answer

The effectiveness increases when the stimulus change immediately follows the target response.

Question 17

A person puts on sunglasses to reduce the glare from the sun. This is an example of:

Accepted Answer

Negative reinforcement through escape

Question 18

Which of the following best describes the role of 'contextual factors' in negative reinforcement?

Accepted Answer

They can mediate the aversiveness of demand situations, influencing the likelihood of escape-maintained behavior.

Question 19

Which of the following is a common misconception about negative reinforcement?

Accepted Answer

It is the same as punishment.
