Question 1

Which of the following best describes the basic principle of operant conditioning?

Accepted Answer

Behavior is shaped by its consequences, such as reinforcement or punishment.

Question 2

A student receives praise from their professor every time they answer a question correctly in class. This is an example of which process in operant conditioning?

Accepted Answer

Positive reinforcement

Question 3

Which reinforcement schedule delivers a reward after a fixed number of responses?

Accepted Answer

Fixed ratio

A rat presses a lever and receives food only after a random amount of time has passed. Which reinforcement schedule is being used?

Accepted Answer

Variable interval

Question 5

Which equation best represents the probability $$P of a $$behavior being repeated under a variable ratio schedule, where $$n is $$the number of responses and $$r is $$the average number of responses required for reinforcement?

Accepted Answer

$$P = \frac{n}{r}$$

Question 6

Which of the following scenarios best illustrates the concept of superstition in operant conditioning?

Accepted Answer

A basketball player wears the same socks every game because they believe it helps them win, even though the socks have no actual effect.

Question 7

Which process in operant conditioning involves removing an unpleasant stimulus to increase the likelihood of a behavior?

Accepted Answer

Negative reinforcement

Question 8

A teacher gives extra credit to students who turn in assignments early, but only after every third early submission. What type of reinforcement schedule is this?

Accepted Answer

Fixed ratio

Which of the following is most likely to produce a high and steady rate of responding in operant conditioning?

Accepted Answer

Variable ratio schedule

Accepted Answer

Extinction

Question 11

A child receives a timeout every time they hit their sibling. This is an example of:

Accepted Answer

Punishment

Question 12

Which of the following best explains why superstitious behaviors can develop according to operant conditioning?

Accepted Answer

Behaviors are repeated because reinforcement is accidentally paired with unrelated actions.

Question 13

A student checks their email at random times and occasionally finds a message from their professor. This is an example of which reinforcement schedule?

Accepted Answer

Variable interval

Question 14

Which of the following is NOT a process of operant conditioning?

Accepted Answer

$$R = \frac{k}{t}$$
