Accepted Answer

The achievement of the semiotic function

Question 2

A child who believes that a doll feels sad when left alone is demonstrating which preoperational concept?

Accepted Answer

Animism

Question 3

In Piaget’s Three Mountains Task (see $$image_1$$), what does a child’s inability to describe the other person's perspective demonstrate?

Accepted Answer

Egocentrism

Question 4

Which of the following best describes centration in Piaget’s preoperational stage?

Accepted Answer

Thinking guided by the appearance of objects and focusing on one variable at a time

Question 5

A researcher shows a child two identical rows of marbles. After spreading out one row (see $$image_2$$), the child says the longer row has more marbles. What cognitive limitation is this an example of?

Accepted Answer

Lack of conservation

Question 6

Which of the following is a hallmark of preoperational thinking according to Piaget?

Accepted Answer

Ability to use symbols for communication and thinking

Question 7

Recent research has challenged Piaget’s view of egocentrism by showing that:

Accepted Answer

Children as young as 2 and 3 can adapt their speech and play to the needs of others

Question 8

According to John Flavell, what is the difference between Level 1 and Level 2 perspective-taking?

Accepted Answer

Level 1 involves understanding that others have different physical perspectives; Level 2 involves complex rules for inferring what others see or experience

Question 9

Which of the following best describes the false-belief principle in theory of mind research?

Accepted Answer

The ability to understand that others can hold beliefs different from reality

Question 10

A 4-year-old is able to predict that another child will look for candy where they last saw it, even though the candy has been moved. This demonstrates:

Accepted Answer

Theory of mind

Question 11

Which factor is most strongly linked to the development of theory of mind in early childhood?

Accepted Answer

Cognitive and language development

Question 12

According to neo-Piagetian theorists like Robbie Case, what limits young children’s performance on cognitive tasks?

Accepted Answer

Short-term storage space (STSS) and operational efficiency

Question 13

A child is asked to place a blue triangle in the correct spot in a matrix classification task (see $$image_3). $$Failure to do so is most likely due to:

Accepted Answer

Limited operational efficiency of short-term storage space

Question 14

Which of the following is a real-world implication of Piaget’s findings for early childhood education?

Accepted Answer

Interventions that support symbol use and pretend play can help children develop social skills

Question 15

Which of the following statements about theory of mind across cultures is supported by research?

Accepted Answer

Certain aspects of theory of mind are universal across cultures

Question 16

A child who insists that a taller glass has more water than a shorter, wider glass, even though both hold the same amount, is demonstrating:

Accepted Answer

Conservation failure due to centration

Question 17

Which of the following best explains why young children often fail matrix classification tasks before instruction?

Accepted Answer

Their operational efficiency and short-term storage space are limited

Question 18

Which of the following is an example of a child demonstrating the semiotic function?

Accepted Answer

Pretending a stick is a sword during play

Question 19

Which of the following best describes the progression of play in early childhood according to Piaget?

Accepted Answer

Children move from constructive and pretend play to sophisticated role-play and rule debating

Question 20

Which of the following equations best represents the concept of operational efficiency in neo-Piagetian theory?

Accepted Answer
