Question 1

Which of the following best describes the difference between sensation and perception?

Accepted Answer

Sensation is the experience of stimuli converted into neural signals, while perception is the process of making sense of sensory input by organizing and interpreting it.

Question 2

A student is waiting in the dining hall and initially notices a strong food smell, but after several minutes, the smell fades. This is an example of which psychological phenomenon?

Accepted Answer

Sensory adaptation

Question 3

Which brain structure is most closely associated with processing emotions such as aggression and fear?

Accepted Answer

Amygdala

Question 4

According to the three-step framework for sensation and perception, what is the correct order of the steps?

Accepted Answer

Sensation, perceptual organization, identification and recognition

Question 5

Which of the following best illustrates top-down processing?

Accepted Answer

Reading a sentence with jumbled letters but still understanding the meaning based on context and prior knowledge.

Question 6

Signal detection theory is primarily concerned with:

Accepted Answer

The ability to distinguish meaningful signals from background noise under conditions of uncertainty.

Question 7

Which of the following is an example of inattentional blindness?

Accepted Answer

Failing to notice a person in a gorilla suit walking through a scene while focusing on counting basketball passes.

Question 8

If a person is able to detect a stimulus 50% of the time, this stimulus is said to be at their:

Accepted Answer

Absolute threshold

Question 9

Which of the following best describes bottom-up processing?

Accepted Answer

Processing that begins with sensory receptors and works up to the brain's integration of sensory information.

Question 10

A radiologist is more likely to detect a tumor in an X-ray than a layperson due to:

Accepted Answer

Top-down processing based on expertise and prior knowledge.

Question 11

Which of the following is NOT a factor that can affect signal detection according to signal detection theory?

Accepted Answer

The color of the stimulus

Question 12

Why do air traffic controllers have mandated breaks after two hours of focused attention?

Accepted Answer

To reduce fatigue and improve accurate signal detection.

Question 13

Which of the following best explains why we cannot attend to every stimulus in our environment at once?

Accepted Answer

Selective attention limits our awareness to focus on certain stimuli.

Question 14

Which of the following is an example of a 'false alarm' in signal detection theory?

Accepted Answer

Detecting a signal when none is present.

Question 15

Which of the following equations best represents the relationship between sensation and perception in the context of information processing?

Accepted Answer

$$	ext{Perception} = f(	ext{Sensation}, ext{Cognition})$$

Question 16

Which of the following is a real-world example of bottom-up and top-down processing working together?

Accepted Answer

Reading a word where the first and last letters are correct but the middle letters are scrambled, and still understanding the word.

Question 17

Which of the following best describes the function of sensory receptor cells?

Accepted Answer

They detect physical stimuli and convert them into electrochemical messages sent to the brain.

Question 18

A person is more likely to notice a flashing red light in a dark room than in a brightly lit room. This is best explained by which concept?

Accepted Answer

Signal detection theory

Question 19

Which of the following is most likely to increase the likelihood of a 'miss' in signal detection theory?

Accepted Answer

High fatigue and low attention

Question 20

Which of the following best describes the role of the thalamus in sensation and perception?

Accepted Answer

It acts as a relay station, directing sensory information to appropriate areas of the brain.
