Q: Which formula correctly represents the calculation of $$d' in $$Signal Detection Theory?

$$d' = Z(\text{Hit Rate}) - Z(\text{False Alarm Rate})$$

Question 1

Which of the following best describes the main purpose of Signal Detection Theory (SDT)?

Accepted Answer

To differentiate between information-bearing patterns (signals) and random patterns (noise) under conditions of uncertainty.

Question 2

In Signal Detection Theory, what does the variable $$d' (d-$$prime) represent?

Accepted Answer

The perceptual sensitivity of the observer to distinguish signal from noise.

Question 3

A baseball umpire calls a pitch a 'strike' when it is outside the strike zone. According to SDT, what type of error is this?

Accepted Answer

False Alarm (Type I error)

Question 4

If an expert driver adopts a more 'lax' criterion (shifts $$\beta to $$the left), what is the likely effect on their performance?

Accepted Answer

Hit rate will increase, but false alarm rate will also increase.

Question 5

Which of the following is NOT a possible outcome in a signal detection task?

Accepted Answer

True Positive

Question 6

What does shifting the criterion ($$\beta) to $$the right on the sensation axis indicate?

Accepted Answer

The observer is adopting a stricter criterion, decreasing both hits and false alarms.

Question 7

Which formula correctly represents the calculation of $$d' in $$Signal Detection Theory?

Accepted Answer

$$d' = Z(	ext{Hit Rate}) - Z(	ext{False Alarm Rate})$$

Question 8

In a radar detection scenario, which factor would most likely increase $$d' ($$perceptual sensitivity)?

Accepted Answer

Improving environmental conditions, such as reducing background noise.

Question 9

Which of the following statements about $$d'$$ and $$\beta is $$TRUE according to SDT?

Accepted Answer

$$d'$$ reflects perceptual sensitivity, while $$\beta$$ reflects decision criterion or bias.

Question 10

A novice driver only responds to very obvious hazards, resulting in a low hit rate and low false alarm rate. What does this indicate about their criterion ($$\beta$$)?

Accepted Answer

They have a strict criterion (high $$\beta).$$

Question 11

Which real-world example best illustrates the concept of a 'miss' in SDT?

Accepted Answer

A smoke detector fails to sound when there is a fire.

Question 12

If two observers have the same $$d'$$ but different $$\beta$$ values, what does this imply?

Accepted Answer

They have the same perceptual sensitivity but different decision criteria.

Question 13

Which of the following factors can independently affect $$d'$$ and $$\beta in a $$signal detection task?

Accepted Answer

Environmental conditions affect $$d'$$, while rewards and penalties affect $$\beta.$$

Question 14

In the context of SDT, what is the main advantage of being able to measure $$d'$$ and $$\beta$$ separately?

Accepted Answer

It allows us to identify the influence of different factors on performance independently.

Question 15

A weather change causes a driver to have more difficulty distinguishing hazards from non-hazards. According to SDT, which variable is most affected?

Accepted Answer

$$d' ($$perceptual sensitivity)

Question 16

Which of the following best describes a 'false alarm' in the context of SDT?

Accepted Answer

The observer incorrectly identifies a signal when only noise is present.

Question 17

In a medical screening test, increasing the strictness of the criterion ($$\beta) $$will most likely result in:

Accepted Answer

Fewer hits and fewer false alarms.

Question 18

Which scenario best illustrates the independence of $$d'$$ and $$\beta$$?

Accepted Answer

Two radiologists have the same ability to detect tumors, but one is more likely to call a tumor present even when uncertain.

Question 19

Which of the following is a correct statement about the relationship between correct decisions and errors in SDT?

Accepted Answer

Correct decisions and errors are related; if one changes, so does the other.
