Question 1

According to Anne Fausto-Sterling's dynamic systems framework, which of the following best describes the process of gender identity development in early childhood?

Accepted Answer

It is a cumulative, interactive process involving biological, psychological, and social factors that change over time.

Question 2

Which of the following is a key criticism of existing clinical theories of gender identity development, as discussed by Fausto-Sterling?

Accepted Answer

They are underdeveloped and fail to account for the dynamic, interactive nature of gender identity formation.

Question 3

In the agnostic model of gender identity formation, which of the following is considered a 'predisposing' factor?

Accepted Answer

Social cognition

Question 4

The naturalist model, as described by Ehrensaft, conceptualizes the 'true gender self' as:

Accepted Answer

Emerging from a complex of chromosomes, gonads, hormones, and brain structures, but also shaped by individual experience.

Question 5

Which of the following best illustrates the dynamic systems approach to gender identity development?

Accepted Answer

Gender identity emerges from ongoing interactions between biological predispositions, social experiences, and psychological processes.

Question 6

According to the study materials, which of the following is a limitation of the agnostic approach to gender identity development?

Accepted Answer

It treats biological and psychosocial factors as unconnected, rather than integrated.

Question 7

A parent is concerned that their child’s cross-gender interests may be a sign of a disorder. According to the dynamic systems perspective, what is the most appropriate response?

Accepted Answer

Cross-gender interests can be part of normal developmental variability and should be understood within the context of the child’s overall environment and experiences.

Question 8

Which of the following best describes the transition from presymbolic to symbolic representation of gender in early childhood?

Accepted Answer

It is a gradual process where children move from sensory and motor experiences to using language and symbols to represent gender.

Question 9

According to the study materials, which of the following is a real-world implication of the dynamic systems model for clinicians working with gender-variant children?

Accepted Answer

Clinicians should consider the child’s developmental history, family context, and social environment when assessing gender identity.

Question 10

Which of the following equations best represents the dynamic systems view of gender identity development, where $$G is $$gender identity, $$B is $$biological factors, $$S is $$social factors, and $$P is $$psychological factors?

Accepted Answer

$$G = B imes S imes P$$

Question 11

A researcher observes that some children with gender dysphoria also display autistic-like behaviors. According to the agnostic model, how should this co-occurrence be interpreted?

Accepted Answer

As a possible co-occurrence that may be unrelated to mainstream gender development.

Question 12

Which of the following statements about the naturalist model is supported by the study materials?

Accepted Answer

It posits that gender identity is a preformed, but unexplained, part of the self that is shaped by both biology and experience.

Question 13

Which of the following best describes the role of feedback systems in the dynamic systems model of gender identity?

Accepted Answer

Feedback systems allow for ongoing adjustment and adaptation of gender identity in response to new experiences.

Question 14

A clinician is working with a 3-year-old who displays gender nonconforming behaviors. According to the dynamic systems approach, which of the following should the clinician consider?

Accepted Answer

The interplay of biological predispositions, family dynamics, and the child’s own experiences.

Question 15

Which of the following is an example of symbolic representation of gender in early childhood?

Accepted Answer

A toddler using words like 'boy' or 'girl' to describe themselves or others.

Question 16

According to the study materials, which of the following is a major difference between the agnostic and naturalist models of gender identity formation?

Accepted Answer

The agnostic model treats biological and psychosocial factors as largely unconnected, while the naturalist model posits a 'true gender self' shaped by both biology and experience.

Question 17

Which of the following best describes the process of internalizing a gender self, according to the dynamic systems framework?

Accepted Answer

It is a gradual process involving repeated interactions between the child and their environment, leading to the development of a stable sense of gender.

Question 18

A psychologist wants to model the influence of multiple factors on gender identity development. Which of the following mathematical expressions best captures the idea that each factor (biological $$B$$, social $$S$$, psychological $$P) $$interacts with the others to produce the outcome $$G$$?

Accepted Answer

$$G = B imes S imes P$$

Question 19

Which of the following real-world scenarios best illustrates the dynamic systems model of gender identity development?

Accepted Answer

A child’s sense of gender changes over time as they interact with family, peers, and cultural expectations, as well as their own biological development.
