Q: In constructing a frequency distribution, which of the following is the correct formula for calculating the relative frequency for a class?

$$\text{Relative frequency} = \frac{\text{Class frequency}}{\text{Total number of observations}}$$

Q: If the average cost to rent a studio increased from $$300 in 2002 to 400 in 2003$$, what is the percentage increase?

$$\frac{400 - 300}{300} \times 100\% = 33.3\%$$

Question 1

Which of the following best describes the type of data provided by the 'Box office sales ($ millions)' column in the movie table shown in Question 1?

Accepted Answer

Quantitative, continuous data

Question 2

In the table listing the five tallest mountains in North America, what type of data is represented by the 'Rank' column?

Question 4

A medical researcher groups the ages of 48 patients who suffered stress strokes into classes with a lower class limit of 25 and a class width of 6. What is the correct formula for determining the class boundaries for the first class?

Accepted Answer

$$25 - 0.5$$ and $$30.5$$

Question 5

In constructing a frequency distribution, which of the following is the correct formula for calculating the relative frequency for a class?

Accepted Answer

$$	ext{Relative frequency} = \frac{	ext{Class frequency}}{	ext{Total number of observations}}$$

Question 6

A stem-and-leaf diagram is constructed for a set of test scores. Which of the following statements is TRUE regarding the construction of this diagram?

Accepted Answer

The choice of stems and leaves can vary, leading to different but valid diagrams.

Question 7

Given the frequency distribution for the number of TVs per household: 1 TV (20), 2 TVs (50), 3 TVs (15), 4 TVs (10), 5 TVs (5), what is the relative frequency for households with 2 TVs?

Accepted Answer

$$0.50$$

Question 8

Which of the following best describes why a truncated bar graph (where the y-axis does not start at zero) can be misleading?

Accepted Answer

It exaggerates the visual difference between bars, making small differences appear larger.

Question 9

If the average cost to rent a studio increased from $$300 in 2002 to 400 in 2003$$, what is the percentage increase?

Accepted Answer

$$\frac{400 - 300}{300} imes 100\% = 33.3\%$$

Question 10

Which of the following is an example of a discrete variable?

Accepted Answer

The number of televisions in a household

Question 11

A frequency histogram is constructed for a data set. Which of the following is TRUE about the area of the bars in a relative frequency histogram?

Accepted Answer

The total area of all bars equals 1.

Question 12

In a real-world scenario, which of the following would be best represented by a continuous variable?

Accepted Answer

The amount of rainfall in a city during a month

Question 13

If a class interval in a frequency distribution is 15–19, what is the class width?

Accepted Answer

$$19 - 15 + 1 = 5$$

Question 14

Which of the following is NOT a reason to use grouping in frequency distributions?

Accepted Answer

To increase the number of classes as much as possible

Question 15

A student is asked to identify the variable in a table listing 'Mountain' and 'Height (ft)'. Which is the correct identification?

Accepted Answer

'Height (ft)' is a quantitative variable

Question 16

If a frequency distribution has the following class limits: 25–30, 31–36, 37–42, what is the class width?

Accepted Answer

$$31 - 25 = 6 ($$but since classes are consecutive, class width is $$6)$$

Which of the following best describes the 'Studio' column in the movie table?

Accepted Answer

Qualitative, nominal data

Question 18

A frequency distribution is constructed for the number of hours students spend on homework. Which of the following is the best reason for using relative frequency instead of frequency?

Accepted Answer

Relative frequency allows for comparison between data sets of different sizes.

Question 19

If a data set contains the values 30, 36, 42, 48, and 54, and you are asked to construct a frequency distribution with a class width of 6, what would be the lower class limit of the second class?
