Question 1

Which of the following best describes the concept of 'descent with modification' as proposed by Charles Darwin?

Accepted Answer

All living things are descended from a common ancestor, with modifications accumulating over generations.

Question 2

Which of the following is NOT a key observation that led Darwin to propose the theory of natural selection?

Accepted Answer

All individuals in a population have the same chance of survival regardless of their traits.

Question 3

Which of the following statements about artificial selection is correct?

Accepted Answer

Artificial selection is a process where humans select for desirable traits in organisms, such as crops or livestock.

Question 4

In the soapberry bug experiment, what was the evolutionary response observed when the food source changed to a fruit with a shorter depth?

Accepted Answer

The beak length of the bugs decreased over time.

Question 5

Which of the following best explains why drug-resistant bacteria become more common after antibiotic use?

Accepted Answer

Antibiotics select for bacteria that already have resistance genes, allowing them to survive and reproduce.

Question 6

Which scientist proposed that acquired characteristics could be inherited, influencing Darwin's thinking?

Accepted Answer

Jean-Baptiste Lamarck

Question 7

According to Darwin's reasoning, which of the following is a direct consequence of individuals producing more offspring than the environment can support?

Accepted Answer

There is a struggle for existence among individuals.

Question 8

Which of the following best describes the difference between 'pattern' and 'process' in the context of evolution?

Accepted Answer

'Pattern' refers to the observable facts of evolution, while 'process' refers to the mechanisms that produce evolutionary change.

Question 9

A population of wild mice has variation in fur color. If a new predator is introduced that can easily spot lighter-colored mice, what is the most likely evolutionary outcome over several generations?

Accepted Answer

The frequency of darker-colored mice will increase.

Question 10

Which of the following equations best represents the exponential growth of a population, as discussed by Thomas Malthus?

Accepted Answer

$$N_t = N_0$ e$$^{rt}$$

Question 11

Which of the following is an example of natural selection acting on a population?

Accepted Answer

A population of insects develops resistance to a pesticide over several generations.

Question 12

Why does natural selection act on populations rather than individuals?

Accepted Answer

Populations evolve over generations as the frequency of advantageous traits increases.

Question 13

Which of the following best describes the concept of 'fitness' in evolutionary biology?

Accepted Answer

The ability of an organism to survive and reproduce in its environment.

Question 14

Which of the following is a real-world example of gradualism as described by Charles Lyell?

Accepted Answer

The slow formation of the Grand Canyon by river erosion over millions of years.

Question 15

If a population of soapberry bugs is exposed to a new fruit with a deeper seed, which of the following is the most likely evolutionary response?

Accepted Answer

The average beak length in the population will increase over generations.

Question 16

Which of the following best explains why populations, not individuals, evolve?

Accepted Answer

Evolution is a change in the genetic composition of a population over generations.

Question 17

Which of the following is NOT a requirement for natural selection to occur?

Accepted Answer

All individuals must survive and reproduce equally.

Question 18

Which of the following best describes the role of scientific evidence in supporting the theory of evolution?

Accepted Answer

Evolution is supported by an overwhelming amount of scientific evidence from multiple fields.

Question 19

Which of the following scenarios best illustrates the process of natural selection?

Accepted Answer

A population of birds with varying beak sizes experiences a drought, and only those with larger beaks can crack the available seeds, leading to an increase in large-beaked birds in the next generation.

Question 20

Which of the following best explains why using antibiotics can lead to an increase in drug-resistant bacteria?

Accepted Answer

Antibiotics kill susceptible bacteria, allowing resistant bacteria to survive and reproduce.
