Question 1

Which of the following best describes the concept of 'emergent properties' in biological systems?

Accepted Answer

New properties that arise at each level of biological organization due to the arrangement and interactions of parts.

Question 2

In the context of energy flow in an ecosystem, which equation best represents the conversion of sunlight to chemical energy during photosynthesis?

Accepted Answer

$$6CO_2 + 6H_2O \rightarrow C_6H_{12}O_6$ + 6O_2$$

Question 3

Which of the following is NOT a unifying theme of biology as described in the study materials?

Accepted Answer

All living things are composed of prokaryotic cells.

Question 4

A population of finches on an island shows variation in beak size. According to Darwin's mechanism of evolution, what is the most likely outcome if a drought favors birds with larger beaks?

Accepted Answer

Finches with larger beaks will have higher survival and reproductive success, increasing the frequency of large-beaked individuals in the next generation.

Question 5

Which statement correctly distinguishes between quantitative and qualitative data in scientific research?

Accepted Answer

Quantitative data are generally recorded as measurements and can be organized into charts or graphs; qualitative data are often recorded in the form of descriptions.

Question 6

Which of the following best explains the difference between climate and weather?

Accepted Answer

Climate refers to a directional change to the global climate that lasts for three decades or more, whereas weather refers to short-term changes.

Question 7

Which domain contains organisms with membrane-enclosed nuclei and organelles?

Accepted Answer

Eukarya

Question 8

Which process is responsible for the unity and diversity of life according to the core theme of biology?

Accepted Answer

Natural selection

Question 9

A scientist observes that plants in a shaded area grow taller than those in direct sunlight. She proposes that light availability affects plant height. What is her proposed explanation called?

Accepted Answer

A hypothesis

Question 10

Which of the following is an example of inductive reasoning in biology?

Accepted Answer

Drawing generalizations from a large number of specific observations.

Question 11

Which of the following best describes the movement of energy and chemicals in an ecosystem?

Accepted Answer

Energy flows through the ecosystem and is lost as heat, while chemicals cycle within the ecosystem.

Question 12

Which of the following is NOT a characteristic of eukaryotic cells?

Accepted Answer

They lack a nucleus.

Question 13

Which of the following best describes the process of scientific inquiry?

Accepted Answer

A search for information and explanations of natural phenomena using observation, hypothesis formation, and testing.

Question 14

Which of the following is the correct definition of a gene?

Accepted Answer

A discrete unit of hereditary information consisting of a specific nucleotide sequence in DNA (or RNA in some viruses).

Question 15

Which of the following is an example of a population in biological terms?

Accepted Answer

A group of individuals of the same species that live in the same area and interbreed, producing fertile offspring.

Question 16

Which of the following best explains why two species may share similar traits according to evolutionary theory?

Accepted Answer

They descended from a common ancestor and inherited traits through heritable changes.

Question 17

Which of the following is a correct example of a scientific hypothesis?

Accepted Answer

Plants grow taller in shaded areas because they receive less light.

Question 18

Which of the following is the correct order of biological organization from smallest to largest?

Accepted Answer

Molecule, cell, tissue, organ, organism, population, community, ecosystem

Question 19

Which of the following is a plausible effect of climate change on biological populations?

Accepted Answer

Some populations may shrink in size, and some species may disappear, potentially leading to extinction.
