Question 1

Which of the following best describes a key hydrologic advantage of prehistoric agricultural terraces in dryland environments such as the Mimbres area?

Accepted Answer

They slow runoff and increase soil moisture retention, improving crop growth.

Question 2

In the context of Zuni dryland agriculture, what is the primary role of organic matter-rich runoff debris transported from forest soils to agricultural fields?

Accepted Answer

It enhances soil fertility by adding nutrients and improving soil structure.

Question 3

Why is the thickness of the soil A horizon considered a reliable indicator of both current and past agricultural productivity?

Accepted Answer

Because it reflects the accumulation of silt and organic carbon from sustained cultivation.

Question 4

A prehistoric terraced field in the Mimbres area receives 50 mm of rain in 45 minutes. Compared to unterraced fields, what is the most likely effect on soil moisture?

Accepted Answer

Soil moisture will increase because terraces slow runoff and allow more infiltration.

Question 5

Which equation best represents the calculation of correlation between soil A horizon thickness and organic carbon content in cultivated terraces?

Accepted Answer

$$r = \frac{\sum (x_i - \bar{x})(y_i - \bar{y})}{\sqrt{\sum (x_i - \bar{x})^2$ \sum (y_i - \bar{y})^2$}}$$

Question 6

In the Colca Valley, Peru, what is the significance of applying manure and hearth ash to agricultural terraces?

Accepted Answer

It replenishes nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus, maintaining soil fertility.

Question 7

Which of the following is a major long-term effect of agriculture on soil resources observed in the Mimbres area?

Accepted Answer

Greater exposure of soil and increased sheet, rill, and gully erosion in cultivated fields.

Question 8

Which geomorphic feature was commonly chosen for ancient agricultural terraces in the Colca Valley, Peru, and why?

Accepted Answer

Steep landslide topography, to maximize water retention and soil stability.

Question 9

How does indigenous knowledge contribute to the sustainability of ancient agricultural systems?

Accepted Answer

By integrating local soil, landscape, and hydrologic understanding to optimize long-term productivity.

Question 10

A researcher compares the organic carbon content of soil A horizons in cultivated, abandoned, and uncultivated fields. Which result would most likely indicate sustained agricultural productivity?

Accepted Answer

Cultivated fields have the highest organic carbon content.

Question 11

Which of the following best explains why 'runoff agriculture' may not be effective in regions with low-intensity rainfall?

Accepted Answer

Low-intensity rainfall does not generate sufficient runoff to be captured by terraces and small dams.

Question 12

In the context of ancient Andean agriculture, which soil management practice contributed to the thickening of dark-colored A horizons?

Accepted Answer

Application of organic amendments such as manure and hearth ash.

Question 13

Which paired comparison is most useful for evaluating the long-term effects of agriculture on soil quality?

Accepted Answer

Cultivated vs. uncultivated soils in the same landscape.

Question 14

A field abandoned 900 years ago in the Mimbres area still shows a thicker A horizon than nearby uncultivated soil. What does this suggest about the legacy of ancient agriculture?

Accepted Answer

Ancient agriculture had a lasting positive effect on soil organic matter and fertility.

Question 15

Which of the following is a critical research need for understanding ancient agroecosystems?

Accepted Answer

Integrated watershed-soil-crop studies across multiple sites and time periods.

Question 16

In the Colca Valley, Peru, what is the primary function of the irrigation network in terraced agriculture?

Accepted Answer

To distribute water evenly across terraces, supporting crop growth in a semi-arid environment.

Question 17

Which soil horizon is most directly affected by the addition of organic amendments in ancient agricultural systems?

Accepted Answer

A horizon

Question 18

A student is asked to estimate the sustainability of an ancient agricultural site. Which combination of factors should they consider?

Accepted Answer

Soil horizon thickness, organic carbon content, and evidence of erosion.

Question 19

Which of the following equations would you use to calculate the percentage of organic carbon in a soil sample?

Accepted Answer

$$	ext{Organic Carbon (25)} = \frac{	ext{Mass of Organic Carbon}}{	ext{Total Soil Mass}} imes 100$$

Question 20

Which of the following best describes the relationship between indigenous soil classification and sustainable land management in the Andes?

Accepted Answer

Indigenous soil classification systems help match crops and management practices to local soil conditions, promoting sustainability.
