Course Overview

Introduction to Anatomy & Physiology I

This course is the first in a two-semester sequence detailing the structure and function of the human body, including the regulation and integration of physiological processes. It covers the biochemical, cellular, and tissue levels of organization, as well as major organ systems and their interrelationships. Laboratory exercises complement lecture topics using microscopy, dissection, and physiological studies.

  • Course Code: BIOL-109

  • Credits: 4

  • Format: Hybrid Asynchronous (approx. 50% online, 50% on-campus)

  • Lab and Lecture Times: Mondays (Lab: 5:30-7:30 pm, Lecture: 7:40-8:40 pm)

Course Learning Outcomes

Scientific Terminology and Levels of Organization

Students will learn to use appropriate scientific terminology when discussing the human body at all levels of organization.

  • Key Point 1: Define and use scientific terms for cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems.

  • Key Point 2: Describe the various components of cell and tissue organization, including their structural and functional significance.

  • Example: Differentiating between epithelial and connective tissues in histology.

Anatomical Organization and System Interactions

Understanding the anatomical organization and structural components of the integumentary, nervous, endocrine, skeletal, and muscular systems is essential for grasping human physiology.

  • Key Point 1: Describe how organ systems function at the cellular, tissue, and organ levels.

  • Key Point 2: Explain how the nervous and endocrine systems function independently and in a coordinated manner to regulate homeostasis.

  • Example: The role of the hypothalamus in integrating nervous and endocrine responses.

Laboratory Skills and Physiological Testing

Students will perform physiological testing in the laboratory and demonstrate skills in microscopy, dissection, and analysis.

  • Key Point 1: Use proper safety equipment (goggles, gloves) during laboratory activities.

  • Key Point 2: Analyze experimental results, including chemical analysis, osmosis, diffusion, and reflex analysis.

  • Example: Measuring osmosis rates in different tissue samples.

Course Materials

Required Texts and Equipment

  • Textbook: Human Anatomy & Physiology (Fetal Pig Version), 2nd ed. by Whiting, C. C.

  • Lab Equipment: Safety eyewear (goggles or glasses), latex, nitrile, or vinyl gloves.

Course Assessments
