Course Overview

Course Number and Title

BIOL2251 (CRN 82365): Human Anatomy & Physiology I Credit Hours: 3.0 semester credit hours

  • This is the first course in a two-semester sequence designed to explore the biological basis of human anatomy and physiology.

  • Topics include the structure and function of the human body at the cellular, tissue, organ, and organ system levels.

  • Emphasis is placed on the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems.

  • This course is designed primarily for non-biology majors, especially those pursuing majors in nursing and allied health professions.

  • This course does not fulfill the Core Curriculum laboratory science requirement under Area D.

Course Prerequisites

  • Chemistry 1151 with a minimum US grade of C, OR

  • Chemistry 1211 with a minimum US grade of C, OR

  • Biology 1107 with a minimum US grade of C, OR

Co-Requisites

  • BIOL 1151L or BIOL2251L (lab) if not already completed, with a minimum US grade of C.

Course Objectives and Outcomes

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • Describe the anatomy of the systems covered in the course.

  • Explain the physiology of the systems included in the course.

  • Compare and contrast the major physiological functions of the different systems with their functions when affected by disease or stress.

  • Predict how various changes in the physiology of cells as well as the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems affect homeostasis.

  • Combine information from multiple sources to explain various disorders in body function.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • LO 1: Identify and/or describe the biological core concepts: evolution, structure and function, information flow, exchange, and storage; pathways and transformations of energy and matter; and systems. This supports focus on the structure and function of the human body.

  • LO 2: Formulate hypotheses and collect, evaluate, and interpret scientific data to solve problems in biological science and supporting fields. This will be assessed by your answers on exams and assignments that require you to interpret and apply new information.

  • LO 5: Effectively communicate scientific ideas to others inside and outside of the biology discipline. This will be assessed by assignments and exams, particularly discussion assignments posted in D2L.

  • LO 6: Identify and describe the impact of biological science on the environment and society. This will be assessed on assignments that look at issues with medical topics related to the course material.

Nursing Outcomes

  • Utilize effective communication skills to promote therapeutic nurse-client interactions and good collegial relationships.

  • Engage in critical thinking by using creative problem solving and making appropriate inferences, based on evidence derived from clinical practice.

  • Demonstrate competence in utilizing information technology resources to advance professional practice.

Dental Hygiene Outcomes

  • Communicate effectively, think critically and conceptually, and contribute to their profession, community, and society.

  • Develop strong knowledge bases, hands-on experience, and the mindset required for success in dental hygiene.
