Q: Which of the following equations best represents the process of nutrient absorption across an epithelial boundary in the small intestine?

$$\text{Carbohydrates} \longrightarrow \text{Monosaccharides}$$

Question 1

Which of the following is NOT a general characteristic of epithelial tissue?

Accepted Answer

Epithelial tissue is highly vascularized, containing many blood vessels.

Question 2

A patient suffers from severe burns that destroy the epidermis. Which function of epithelial tissue is most directly compromised?

Accepted Answer

Protection against abrasion and pathogens

Question 3

Which of the following best describes the polarity of epithelial cells?

Accepted Answer

The apical surface faces the external environment or lumen, while the basal surface attaches to the basement membrane.

Question 4

Which type of epithelial tissue is best adapted for rapid diffusion and filtration, and where is it commonly found?

Accepted Answer

Simple squamous epithelium; found in alveoli of lungs and lining blood vessels

Question 5

A histology slide shows a tissue with multiple layers of cells, with the apical layer consisting of flat, anucleate cells. What is the most likely identity and function of this tissue?

Accepted Answer

Keratinized stratified squamous epithelium; protection from dehydration and abrasion

Question 6

Which of the following best explains why epithelial tissues are avascular?

Accepted Answer

Epithelial tissues rely on diffusion from underlying connective tissue for nutrient and waste exchange.

Question 7

Which of the following modifications would you expect to find on the apical surface of epithelial cells lining the small intestine, and what is its function?

Accepted Answer

Microvilli; increase surface area for absorption

Question 8

A gland that releases its product by exocytosis without loss of cellular material is classified as which type of gland?

Accepted Answer

Merocrine gland

Question 9

Which of the following best distinguishes endocrine from exocrine glands?

Accepted Answer

Endocrine glands secrete hormones directly into the bloodstream; exocrine glands secrete products into ducts.

Question 10

Which of the following equations best represents the process of nutrient absorption across an epithelial boundary in the small intestine?

Accepted Answer

$$	ext{Carbohydrates} \longrightarrow ext{Monosaccharides}$$

Question 11

A tissue sample from the urinary bladder shows cells that change shape from cuboidal to squamous as the organ fills. What is this tissue and its primary function?

Accepted Answer

Transitional epithelium; accommodates distension and recoil

Question 12

Which of the following best describes the function of tight junctions in epithelial tissue?

Accepted Answer

They prevent the passage of substances between adjacent cells, forcing materials to pass through the cells.

Question 13

A researcher observes a single layer of tall, rectangular cells with nuclei aligned near the basal surface and cilia on the apical surface. Where is this tissue most likely found, and what is its function?

Accepted Answer

Lining the uterine (fallopian) tubes; moving the ovum toward the uterus

Question 14

Which of the following is a key difference between serous and mucous exocrine gland secretions?

Accepted Answer

Serous secretions are watery and enzyme-rich, while mucous secretions are viscous and glycoprotein-rich.

Question 15

Which of the following best explains why stratified squamous epithelium is found lining the mouth and esophagus?

Accepted Answer

It provides protection against abrasion from food and pathogens.

Question 16

Which of the following best describes the process of exocytosis in glandular epithelial cells?

Accepted Answer

Vesicles containing secretory products fuse with the plasma membrane, releasing their contents outside the cell.

Question 17

Which of the following best describes the role of the basement membrane in epithelial tissue?

Accepted Answer

It provides structural support and acts as a selective filtration barrier between epithelium and underlying connective tissue.

Question 18

A tissue sample shows a single layer of cube-shaped cells with round nuclei, forming the walls of kidney tubules. What is the most likely function of this tissue?

Accepted Answer

Secretion and absorption

Question 19

Which of the following best explains why red blood cells do NOT exhibit polarity, unlike epithelial cells?

Accepted Answer

Red blood cells are not attached to a basement membrane and do not have distinct apical and basal surfaces.

Question 20

Which of the following best describes the difference between simple and stratified epithelia?

Accepted Answer

Simple epithelia have one layer of cells; stratified epithelia have two or more layers.
