Epithelial Tissues

Overview of Epithelial Tissue

Epithelial tissues are specialized layers of cells that cover body surfaces, line internal cavities, and form glands. They play crucial roles in protection, absorption, secretion, and filtration. The structure and function of each epithelial tissue type are closely related to their location in the body.

Classification of Epithelial Tissues

Epithelial tissues are classified based on cell shape and the number of cell layers. The main types include:

  • Simple epithelium: Single layer of cells, specialized for absorption, secretion, and filtration.

  • Stratified epithelium: Multiple layers of cells, specialized for protection.

  • Transitional epithelium: Specialized for stretching and changing shape.

Types of Epithelial Tissues

Tissue Type

Structure

Location

Primary Function

Simple Squamous

Single layer of flat cells

Lung air sacs, capillary walls, serous membranes

Rapid diffusion & filtration

Simple Cuboidal

Single layer of cube-shaped cells

Kidney tubules, gland ducts, ovary surface

Secretion & absorption

Simple Columnar

Single layer of tall cells, often with goblet cells

Digestive tract (stomach to anus), mucosae

Absorption & mucus secretion

Pseudostratified Columnar

Single layer with multi-layer appearance, often ciliated

Respiratory tract

Moves mucus and debris, secretion, absorption

Stratified Squamous

Multiple layers with flat apical cells

Outer skin, mouth lining, esophagus

Protection against friction/abrasion

Stratified Cuboidal/Columnar

Multiple layers of cuboidal or tall cells

Ducts of large glands

Protection & secretion in large ducts

Transitional

Modified stratified, cells change shape

Urinary bladder, ureters, urethra

Stretching & expanding for fluid

Glandular Epithelium

Glandular epithelium forms glands that secrete substances. Glands are classified as endocrine or exocrine based on their method of secretion.

Gland Type

Structure

Location

Function

Endocrine Glands

Ductless epithelium

Thyroid, adrenals, pituitary

Secrete hormones directly into bloodstream

Exocrine Glands

Ducted epithelium

Sweat glands, oil glands, liver, pancreas

Secrete products to surfaces via ducts

Key Terms and Definitions

  • Diffusion: Movement of molecules from high to low concentration.

  • Filtration: Passage of substances through a membrane by pressure.

  • Absorption: Uptake of substances into cells or tissues.

  • Secretion: Release of substances from cells or glands.

  • Goblet cells: Specialized cells that secrete mucus.

  • Cilia: Hair-like projections that move substances along surfaces.

Examples and Applications

  • Simple squamous epithelium in alveoli allows rapid gas exchange during respiration.

  • Transitional epithelium in the bladder enables expansion as the bladder fills with urine.

  • Stratified squamous epithelium protects the skin and oral cavity from mechanical injury.

Additional info: Epithelial tissues are avascular (lack blood vessels) but are innervated and rely on diffusion from underlying connective tissues for nutrients. They exhibit high regenerative capacity, especially in areas subject to friction or injury.
