Question 1

Which of the following best describes the primary function of the circulatory system?

Accepted Answer

To transport nutrients, gases, hormones, and waste products throughout the body

Question 2

Why is the circulatory system described as a 'closed' system?

Accepted Answer

Because blood is always contained within vessels and the heart, not mixing directly with body tissues

Question 3

Which of the following substances is NOT typically transported by the circulatory system?

Accepted Answer

Digestive enzymes

Question 4

Blood pressure is necessary to move blood through the circulatory system. Which equation best represents the relationship between blood flow ($$Q$$), pressure difference ($$\Delta P$$), and resistance ($$R$$)?

Accepted Answer

$$Q = \frac{\Delta P}{R}$$

Question 5

A patient has a blockage in the pulmonary artery. Which of the following is the most likely immediate consequence?

Accepted Answer

Deoxygenated blood cannot reach the lungs for oxygenation

Question 6

Which side of the heart pumps blood to the systemic circuit, and why is its myocardium thicker?

Accepted Answer

Left side; because it must generate higher pressure to pump blood throughout the entire body

Question 7

Which of the following best describes the function of the pericardium?

Accepted Answer

It protects the heart and reduces friction during heartbeats

Question 8

Which layer of the heart wall is responsible for the heart's contractile function?

Accepted Answer

Myocardium

Question 9

Intercalated discs are found in cardiac muscle. What is their primary function?

Accepted Answer

To connect cardiac muscle cells and allow rapid transmission of electrical impulses

Question 10

A patient has a defect in their gap junctions within the myocardium. Which of the following symptoms would most likely result?

Accepted Answer

Impaired electrical conduction leading to arrhythmias

Question 11

Which of the following best defines a vein?

Accepted Answer

A vessel that carries blood toward the heart

Question 12

Which blood vessel carries deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle to the lungs?

Accepted Answer

Pulmonary artery

Question 13

The left atrium receives blood from which vessels, and what is the condition of this blood?

Accepted Answer

Pulmonary veins; oxygenated

Question 14

Which valve prevents backflow of blood from the right ventricle to the right atrium?

Accepted Answer

Tricuspid valve

Question 15

Which of the following correctly matches the valve with its location and function?

Accepted Answer

Tricuspid valve: between right atrium and right ventricle; prevents backflow into right atrium

Question 16

Why does the myocardium require its own blood supply, and from where do the coronary arteries branch?

Accepted Answer

Because the heart is too thick for diffusion; coronary arteries branch from the aorta

Question 17

What is an anastomosis in the context of coronary circulation?

Accepted Answer

A connection between two blood vessels that provides alternate routes for blood flow

Question 18

Which vessel drains most of the coronary veins and empties into the right atrium?

Accepted Answer

Coronary sinus

Question 19

A patient has a congenital defect where the bicuspid (mitral) valve is replaced with a tricuspid valve. Which of the following is the most likely direct effect?

Accepted Answer

Backflow of blood from the left ventricle to the left atrium may increase

Question 20

If the pressure in the left ventricle is 120 mmHg and the pressure in the aorta is 80 mmHg, what is the pressure gradient ($$\Delta P) $$driving blood through the aortic valve?

Accepted Answer

$$\Delta P = 120 - 80 = 40$$ mmHg
