Course Overview
This course, Human Anatomy and Physiology I with Lab (BIO137), is an introductory college-level course designed to provide students with foundational knowledge of the structure and function of the human body. The course integrates both lecture and laboratory components, covering topics such as basic chemistry, cell biology, tissues, and major organ systems including integumentary, skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems.
Course Credits and Structure
Lecture: 3 credits
Laboratory: 1 credit
Format: Online, with both asynchronous lectures and virtual lab exercises
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
Explain basic chemical and organic chemistry principles as they apply to physiological processes.
Describe the cell structure and function.
Describe the basic structure and function of major tissue types.
Recognize the complementarity of structure and function.
Describe the basic metabolic processes of organ systems.
Explain the interrelationships between organ systems and physiological processes.
Explain the major homeostatic mechanisms in each body system in response to internal and external environmental changes.
Explain the physiological and anatomical mechanisms of common dysfunctions.
General Education and Essential Skills
This course aligns with General Education Student Learning Outcomes in Natural Science.
It supports the development of Kentucky Essential Skills for college graduates, including scientific reasoning and problem-solving.
Course Topics and Modules
The course is organized into the following modules, each focusing on key topics in anatomy and physiology:
Module 01: Introduction to Anatomy, Physiology, and Chemistry
Module 02: Cell Biology and Tissues
Module 03: Integumentary and Skeletal Systems
Module 04: Nervous and Muscle Tissue
Module 05: Nervous and Sensory Systems
Laboratory Units
Lab Unit 01: Lab Exercises 1-2
Lab Unit 02: Lab Exercises 3-4

Grade Replacement Policy
One lowest lecture module exam grade may be replaced by the final exam grade (if higher), with specific restrictions.
Attendance and Participation Policies
This is a non-self-paced online course; students must complete assignments regularly throughout the week.
Failure to watch weekly lecture videos or submit lab assignments will result in an absence.
Missing more than 20% of lab assignments (excused or unexcused) will result in being dropped from the course with a failing grade.
Excused Absences and Make-Up Work
Excused absences require notification and documentation within 24 hours of the due date.
Excused reasons include illness, death of an immediate family member, college-approved field trips, or major religious holidays (with advance notice).
Technological issues are not considered valid excuses for missing assignments.
Make-up exams and assignments are available only for excused absences.
Remote Proctoring and Academic Integrity
All major assessments are remotely proctored using Respondus Lockdown Browser and webcam.
Cheating will result in a zero for the assignment and possible further disciplinary action.
Students must show their entire work environment and ID at the start of proctored assessments.
Support and Accessibility
Students with disabilities may request accommodations through the Student Accessibility Services (SAS).
Contact information for course leaders, coordinators, and support staff is provided in the syllabus.
