Question 1

Which of the following best describes the function of the auditory ossicles in the middle ear?

Accepted Answer

They transmit and amplify sound vibrations from the tympanic membrane to the oval window.

Question 2

A patient complains of difficulty equalizing ear pressure during flights. Which structure is most likely not functioning properly?

Accepted Answer

Pharyngotympanic (Eustachian) tube

Question 3

Which fluid fills the bony labyrinth of the inner ear?

Accepted Answer

Perilymph

Question 4

The maculae in the vestibule are responsible for detecting which type of movement?

Accepted Answer

Linear acceleration and static equilibrium

Question 5

Which of the following best explains why otoliths are important for balance?

Accepted Answer

They add mass to the otolithic membrane, causing it to lag during linear acceleration and bend hair cells.

Question 6

A person who cannot sense rotational movements of the head likely has damage to which structure?

Accepted Answer

Crista ampullaris in the semicircular canals

Question 7

Which of the following is the correct sequence for the transmission of sound from the external environment to the inner ear?

Accepted Answer

Tympanic membrane → malleus → incus → stapes → oval window

Question 8

Which membrane forms the upper boundary of the cochlear duct and separates it from the scala vestibuli?

Accepted Answer

Vestibular membrane

Question 9

The organ of Corti is primarily responsible for which function?

Accepted Answer

Transducing sound vibrations into nerve impulses

Question 10

If the basilar membrane is damaged, which sense would be most affected?

Accepted Answer

Hearing

Question 11

Which of the following best describes the orientation and function of the utricle?

Accepted Answer

Oriented horizontally; detects linear front-back and side-side motions

Question 12

A blow to the head damages the kinocilium in the saccule. Which function is most likely impaired?

Accepted Answer

Detection of vertical (up-down) linear acceleration

Question 13

Which of the following statements about the cochlear duct is correct?

Accepted Answer

It contains the organ of Corti, which is responsible for hearing.

Question 14

Which of the following best explains why the middle ear cannot be removed as a single structure?

Accepted Answer

It is a chamber within the temporal bone, not a discrete structure.

Question 15

A patient with vertigo is found to have abnormal function in the semicircular canals. Which type of movement is most likely affected?

Accepted Answer

Rotational movements of the head

Question 16

Which of the following best describes the role of the tectorial membrane in hearing?

Accepted Answer

It interacts with hair cells in the organ of Corti to transduce sound vibrations.

Question 17

If the pharyngotympanic tube becomes blocked, which of the following is a likely consequence?

Accepted Answer

Pressure differences across the tympanic membrane may cause pain or hearing loss.

Question 18

Which of the following correctly matches the structure with its fluid content?

Accepted Answer

Membranous sacs (utricle and saccule): endolymph

Question 19

A sudden stop in a car causes a person to feel as if their head is still moving forward. Which structure is primarily responsible for detecting this sensation?

Accepted Answer

Maculae in the vestibule

Question 20

Which of the following best describes the difference between the scala vestibuli and the scala tympani?

Accepted Answer

The scala vestibuli is above the cochlear duct, separated by the vestibular membrane; the scala tympani is below, separated by the basilar membrane.
