Accepted Answer

The process of directing our awareness to relevant stimuli while ignoring irrelevant ones.

Question 2

A driver turns down the radio volume when entering heavy traffic. This behavior illustrates which concept?

Accepted Answer

Auditory selective attention and its limitations.

Question 3

Which scenario best demonstrates the concept of inattentional blindness?

Accepted Answer

A person fails to notice a cyclist while focusing on traffic signals.

Question 4

According to the lecture, why is selective attention necessary?

Accepted Answer

Because it allows us to tune out insignificant information and focus on what is important.

Question 5

Which of the following is an example of endogenous selective attention?

Accepted Answer

Choosing to focus on a textbook while studying for an exam.

Question 6

What is the main difference between endogenous and exogenous selective attention?

Accepted Answer

Endogenous attention is voluntary and goal-directed, while exogenous attention is involuntary and stimulus-driven.

Question 7

In the context of sports, how do skilled performers differ from novices in their use of visual selective attention?

Accepted Answer

Skilled performers know what to attend to and when, showing more efficient attention strategies.

Question 8

Which method is commonly used to measure visual selective attention?

Accepted Answer

Recording eye movements.

Question 9

A soccer player must decide whether to pass or shoot while monitoring defenders. This scenario best illustrates:

Accepted Answer

The need to shift selective attention between correcting actions and monitoring the environment.

Question 10

Which of the following statements about auditory selective attention is TRUE?

Accepted Answer

Auditory selective attention is limited and cannot process multiple inputs as efficiently as visual attention.

Question 11

According to North & Hargreaves (1999), what effect does arousing music have on driving performance?

Accepted Answer

It impairs driving performance due to increased cognitive demand.

Question 12

Which of the following best explains why multitasking is difficult for novices?

Accepted Answer

Novices are poor at doing two things at once due to limited attention resources.

Question 13

If a person is listening to two conversations at once and can only process one, which paradigm does this illustrate?

Accepted Answer

Dichotic listening paradigm.

Question 14

Which equation best represents the allocation of attention resources between a primary and secondary task?

Accepted Answer

$$R_{total} = R_{primary} + R_{secondary}$$

Question 15

Which of the following is NOT a strategy used by skilled performers in selective attention?

Accepted Answer

Randomly attending to all available stimuli.

Question 16

During a complex visual search, which area of the retina is responsible for clear perception?

Accepted Answer

Fovea

Rapid voluntary movements from one fixation point to another.

Question 18

A person is able to track a moving object smoothly with their eyes. This is an example of:

Accepted Answer

Smooth pursuit eye movements.

Question 19

Which of the following is most likely to occur when both driving and listening to arousing music require high cognitive demand?

Accepted Answer

Driving performance will be impaired due to limited processing capacity.

Question 20

Which statement best summarizes the effect of interference on selective attention?

Accepted Answer
