Question 1

According to the study of identical twins separated at birth, what is the main insight about the influence of genetics on psychological traits?

Accepted Answer

Genetics and environment contribute equally, but genetics play a significant role in similarities between twins.

Question 2

Which of the following best describes the concept of 'adaptation' in evolutionary theory?

Accepted Answer

A trait that increases an organism's fitness in a specific environment, potentially becoming more common over generations.

Question 3

Suppose a population of moths lives in an environment where tree bark becomes darker due to pollution. According to natural selection, what is most likely to happen to the frequency of dark-colored moths over time?

Accepted Answer

The frequency of dark-colored moths will increase because they are better camouflaged and more likely to survive and reproduce.

Question 4

Which equation best represents the basic principle of heritability in behavioral genetics?

Accepted Answer

$$h^2$$ = \frac{V_G}{V_P}$$

Question 5

A researcher finds that children raised in harsh, unpredictable environments tend to adopt a 'fast' life history strategy. Which of the following is NOT a characteristic of this strategy?

Accepted Answer

High investment in each child

Question 6

According to evolutionary developmental psychology, why might humans have evolved a slow life history strategy in some environments?

Accepted Answer

Because safe, predictable environments support long-term planning and high parental investment, increasing offspring survival.

Question 7

Which of the following best illustrates the interaction between genes and environment in evolutionary theory?

Accepted Answer

The environment selects for certain genetic traits, making some genes more common in specific contexts.

Question 8

Which of the following is a key difference between cultural evolution and biological evolution?

Accepted Answer

Cultural evolution involves the transmission of learned behaviors and knowledge, while biological evolution involves genetic inheritance.

Question 9

A psychologist is studying the attachment behaviors of infants and their caregivers. According to evolutionary psychology, why is this relationship important?

Accepted Answer

It increases the likelihood that infants will survive by promoting behaviors that elicit care and protection.

Question 10

Which of the following scenarios best demonstrates the concept of 'parental investment' as described in evolutionary psychology?

Accepted Answer

A mother spends significant time and resources caring for her child, ensuring its survival and future reproductive success.

Question 11

Which of the following best describes the 'slow' life history strategy?

Accepted Answer

Postponed sex, few partners, and high investment in each child.

Question 12

If a gene variant increases survival in one environment but decreases it in another, what does this illustrate about natural selection?

Accepted Answer

The advantage of a gene depends on the specific environment, showing gene-environment interaction.

Question 13

Which of the following is an example of a real-world application of evolutionary psychology?

Accepted Answer

Studying how parental investment strategies affect child development in different cultures.

Question 14

According to the materials, what is the main reason that humans are more genetically similar than diverse?

Accepted Answer

Humans have a very recent common ancestry and share a large proportion of their genes.

Question 15

Which of the following best explains why evolutionary psychologists study both animal and human behavior?

Accepted Answer

To understand how certain behaviors may have evolved to solve similar adaptive problems across species.

Question 16

A population of birds develops a new song pattern that helps them attract mates more successfully. Over several generations, this song becomes common. What evolutionary process does this illustrate?

Accepted Answer

Natural selection

Question 17

Which of the following statements about heritability is correct?

Accepted Answer

Heritability measures the proportion of variation in a trait due to genetic differences within a population.

Question 18

Which of the following is a common misconception about evolutionary theory?

Accepted Answer

Evolution is a process that occurs only at the genetic level and is unaffected by environment.

Question 19

A psychologist observes that children in unpredictable environments tend to focus on immediate rewards rather than long-term goals. Which life history strategy does this behavior reflect?

Accepted Answer

Fast life history strategy

Question 20

Which of the following best summarizes the main insight from the study of the Galápagos finches by Darwin?

Accepted Answer

Species adapt to their environments through natural selection, leading to the evolution of new species.
