Question 1

Which of the following best describes the concept of brain plasticity?

Accepted Answer

The brain's ability to change by reorganizing after damage or building new pathways based on experience.

Question 2

Daniel Kish, who is completely blind, uses echolocation to navigate his environment. What does this example best illustrate about the human brain?

Accepted Answer

Plasticity, as the brain's visual centers are engaged for navigation despite blindness.

Accepted Answer

Glial cells

Question 4

A neuron fires an action potential only when excitatory signals exceed inhibitory signals by a certain threshold. What is this principle called?

Accepted Answer

All-or-none response

Accepted Answer

Endorphins

Question 6

Which part of the nervous system controls the body's skeletal muscles?

Accepted Answer

Somatic nervous system

Question 7

The adrenal glands secrete hormones that help arouse the body during stress. Which hormones are primarily released by the adrenal glands?

Accepted Answer

Epinephrine (adrenaline) and norepinephrine (noradrenaline)

Question 11

Which equation best represents the threshold principle for neuron firing?

Accepted Answer

$$E_{total} - I_{total} \geq heta$$

Question 12

Accepted Answer

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

Question 13

A football player suffers repeated head trauma and later shows signs of brain degeneration. Which concept does this scenario best illustrate?

Accepted Answer

Brain-damage effects linked to specific areas and the limits of self-repair

Question 14

Which part of the cerebral cortex is responsible for registering and processing body touch and movement sensations?

Accepted Answer

Somatosensory cortex

Question 15

Which of the following is TRUE about the effects of endocrine messages compared to neural messages?

Accepted Answer

Endocrine messages are slower and longer-lasting than neural messages.

Question 16

Which structure connects the left and right hemispheres of the brain, allowing communication between them?

Accepted Answer

Corpus callosum

Question 17

A person with a severed corpus callosum is shown an object in their left visual field. Which hemisphere processes this information, and what is the likely outcome?

Accepted Answer

Right hemisphere; the person cannot verbally name the object.

Question 18

Which of the following best describes the function of the limbic system?

Accepted Answer

Association with emotions and drives
