Overview of the Nine Abdominopelvic Regions

The abdominopelvic cavity is divided into nine regions by clinicians to help localize and describe the locations of internal organs. This division is accomplished using two transverse (horizontal) planes and two parasagittal (vertical) planes, forming a grid similar to a tic-tac-toe board.

  • Umbilical Region (5): The central square of the grid, located around the navel (umbilicus). It is often used as a reference point for the other regions.

  • Hypochondriac Regions (1 - right, 3 - left): These are the superior lateral regions, located to the right and left of the epigastric region, beneath the cartilage of the lower ribs.

  • Epigastric Region (2): The superior central region, located above the umbilical region and between the hypochondriac regions. It is situated over the stomach.

  • Lumbar Regions (4 - right, 6 - left): The middle lateral regions, located to the right and left of the umbilical region.

  • Hypogastric (Pubic) Region (8): The inferior central region, located below the umbilical region.

  • Inguinal (Iliac) Regions (7 - right, 9 - left): The inferior lateral regions, located to the right and left of the hypogastric region, overlying the iliac bones.

Example: Pain in the right lower quadrant may be localized to the right inguinal (iliac) region, which can help clinicians diagnose conditions such as appendicitis.
