Anatomy is the study of the structure of the human body. Understanding anatomical terminology is essential for describing body parts, their locations, and relationships. This section introduces the main subdisciplines and foundational concepts in anatomy.
Anatomy: The scientific study of the structure of living organisms.
Morphology: The study of the form and structure of organisms and their specific structural features.
Physiology: The study of the functions and processes of the body and its parts.
Gross Anatomy: The study of body structures visible to the naked eye.
Dissection: The process of carefully cutting apart body structures to study their relationships.
Regional Anatomy: Study of all structures in a particular region of the body.
Systemic Anatomy: Study of body systems, such as the skeletal or muscular systems.
Surface Anatomy: Study of external features and their relation to deeper structures.
Microscopic Anatomy: Study of structures too small to be seen with the naked eye.
Histology: Study of tissues at the microscopic level.
Developmental Anatomy: Study of structural changes throughout the lifespan.

The Hierarchy of Structural Organization
The human body is organized into a hierarchy of structural levels, each building upon the previous one. Understanding these levels is fundamental to anatomy and physiology.
Atoms: The smallest units of matter; combine to form molecules. (Chemical level)
Molecules: Groups of atoms bonded together. (Chemical level)
Macromolecules: Large, complex molecules such as proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids. (Chemical level)
Cellular Organelles: Specialized structures within cells that perform specific functions. (Cellular level)
Cells: Basic units of life; smallest living units in the body. (Cellular level)
Tissues: Groups of similar cells performing a common function. (Tissue level)
Organs: Structures composed of two or more tissue types that perform specific functions. (Organ level)
Organ Systems: Groups of organs working together to perform complex functions. (System level)
Organism: The complete living being. (Organismal level)
Four Classes of Macromolecules: Proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, nucleic acids.
Examples of Organ Systems: Skeletal, muscular, nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, urinary, reproductive, endocrine, lymphatic, integumentary.
Units of Measurement
Understanding metric units is essential for estimating and describing anatomical structures.
Length: Measured in meters (m), centimeters (cm), and millimeters (mm).
Weight: Measured in kilograms (kg) and grams (g).
Volume: Measured in liters (L); a liter is roughly equivalent to a quart.
Example: The average adult human heart is about 12 cm long, and a liter of fluid is about the size of a large bottle of water.
Gross Anatomy Introduction
Anatomical Position
The anatomical position is a standard reference point used to describe locations and directions on the human body.
Anatomical Position: The body stands upright, facing forward, with feet parallel and arms at the sides, palms facing forward.
Left and Right: Always refer to the subject's left and right, not the observer's.
Regional & Directional Terms
Directional terms are used to describe the locations of structures relative to other structures or locations in the body.
Superior (Cranial): Toward the head or upper part of a structure.
Inferior (Caudal): Away from the head or toward the lower part of a structure.
Anterior (Ventral): Toward the front of the body.
Posterior (Dorsal): Toward the back of the body.
Medial: Toward the midline of the body.
Lateral: Away from the midline of the body.
Proximal: Closer to the origin of a body part or point of attachment.
Distal: Farther from the origin of a body part or point of attachment.
Superficial (External): Toward or at the body surface.
Deep (Internal): Away from the body surface; more internal.
Example: The heart is medial to the lungs; the fingers are distal to the elbow.
Body Planes and Sections
Body planes are imaginary lines used to divide the body into sections for anatomical study.
Frontal (Coronal) Plane: Divides the body into anterior and posterior parts.
Transverse (Horizontal) Plane: Divides the body into superior and inferior parts.
Median (Midsagittal) Plane: Divides the body into equal right and left halves.
Parasagittal Plane: Divides the body into unequal right and left parts.
Section: A cut made along a plane to observe the internal structures.
Human Body Plan and Anatomical Variability
The human body plan refers to the general structural organization of the body. Anatomical variability means that while most humans share the same basic body plan, variations exist in organ position, size, and shape.
Body Cavities & Membranes
The body contains several major cavities that house and protect internal organs. These cavities are lined by membranes and may contain smaller subcavities.
Dorsal (Posterior) Body Cavity:
Cranial Cavity: Located within the skull; houses the brain.
Vertebral (Spinal) Cavity: Located within the vertebral column; houses the spinal cord.
The cranial and vertebral cavities are continuous with each other.
Ventral (Anterior) Body Cavity:

Right Pleural Cavity: Contains the right lung.
Left Pleural Cavity: Contains the left lung.
Mediastinum: Central compartment between the lungs, containing the heart (in the pericardial cavity), trachea, bronchi, esophagus, thymus, major blood vessels, lymphatic vessels, and nerves.
Abdominopelvic Cavity:
Abdominal Cavity: Contains the liver, gall bladder, stomach, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, ureters, small intestine, and most of the large intestine.
Pelvic Cavity: Contains the urinary bladder, reproductive organs, and rectum.
Structures within the Mediastinum: Heart (pericardial cavity), trachea, right and left primary bronchi, esophagus, thymus gland, thoracic aorta, superior and inferior vena cava, thoracic duct, lymphatic vessels, phrenic and vagus nerves, diaphragm.
Serous Cavities and Membranes
Serous membranes line the ventral body cavities and cover the organs within them. They secrete serous fluid to reduce friction.
Pleura: Serous membrane surrounding the lungs.
Pericardium: Serous membrane surrounding the heart.
Peritoneum: Serous membrane lining the abdominopelvic cavity and covering abdominal organs.
Serous Fluid: Lubricates the surfaces of the organs and cavity walls.
Abdominal Quadrants
The abdomen is divided into four quadrants for clinical and anatomical reference. Each quadrant contains specific organs.
