Anatomical Terminology
Directional Terms
Directional terms are used in anatomy to describe the locations of structures relative to other structures or locations in the body. Understanding these terms is essential for clear communication in the study of anatomy and physiology.
Ipsilateral: Refers to structures on the same side of the body. Example: The right arm and right leg are ipsilateral.
Contralateral: Refers to structures on opposite sides of the body. Example: The right arm and left leg are contralateral.
Regional Terms
Regional terms specify particular areas of the body. These terms are often derived from Latin or Greek and are used to precisely identify locations for study or clinical reference.
Anatomical Name (Region) | Common Term |
|---|---|
Cephalon (cephalic) | Head |
Cervicis (cervical) | Neck |
Thoracis (thoracic) | Chest |
Brachium (brachial) | Upper arm |
Antebrachium (antebrachial) | Forearm |
Carpus (carpal) | Wrist |
Manus (manual) | Hand |
Pollicis (pollex) | Thumb |
Abdomen (abdominal) | Abdominal region |
Umbilicus (umbilical) | Navel or bellybutton |
Pelvis (pelvic) | Pelvic region |
Pubis (pubic) | Anterior pelvis or genital region |
Inguen (inguinal) | Groin |
Lumbus (lumbar) | Lower back |
Gluteus (gluteal) | Buttock region |
Femur (femoral) | Thigh |
Patella (patellar) | Kneecap |
Crus (crural) | Anterior leg (knee to ankle) |
Sura (sural) | Posterior leg (calf) |
Tarsus (tarsal) | Ankle |
Pes (pedal) | Foot |
Planta (plantar) | Sole of the foot |
Hallucis (hallux) | Great toe (big toe) |
Body Planes
Body planes are imaginary lines that divide the body into sections. These planes are used to describe locations, directions, and movements of body parts.
Frontal (Coronal) Plane: A vertical plane that divides the body into anterior (front) and posterior (back) portions. Example: The frontal plane separates the chest (anterior) from the back (posterior).
Additional info: Other commonly referenced planes include the sagittal plane (divides the body into right and left portions) and the transverse (horizontal) plane (divides the body into superior and inferior portions).
