Organization of the Human Body

Levels of Structural Organization

The human body is organized in a hierarchical manner, from the simplest to the most complex structures. Understanding these levels is fundamental to Anatomy & Physiology.

  • Cell: The basic structural and functional unit of life. Examples include muscle cell, nerve cell, and red blood cell.

  • Tissue: A group of similar cells working together to perform a specific function. Examples: muscle tissue, nervous tissue, epithelial tissue.

  • Organ: A structure composed of two or more different tissue types working together. Example: The heart contains muscle, connective, epithelial, and nervous tissues.

  • Organ System: A group of organs working together to perform major body functions. Example: The digestive system includes the mouth, esophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, pancreas, and gallbladder.

  • Organism: The complete living being, composed of all organ systems.

Characteristics and Requirements of Life

Major Characteristics of Life

Living organisms share several essential properties that distinguish them from non-living matter.

  • Metabolism: The ability to obtain and use energy through chemical reactions.

  • Responsiveness: The ability to sense and respond to changes in the environment.

  • Movement: Movement of the body or substances within the body.

  • Growth: Increase in cell size, number, or both.

  • Differentiation: Cells become specialized for specific functions.

  • Reproduction: Production of new cells or a new organism.

Requirements for Life

  • Oxygen: Essential for cellular energy production.

  • Water: Required for chemical reactions and transport.

  • Nutrients: Provide energy and materials for growth and repair.

  • Normal body temperature: Human cells function best around 37°C (98.6°F).

  • Atmospheric pressure: Necessary for breathing and gas exchange.

  • Humans require oxygen to produce ATP during cellular respiration.

Homeostasis

Definition and Importance

Homeostasis is the maintenance of a relatively stable internal environment despite external or internal changes. It is vital for normal body function and survival.

  • Examples: Regulation of body temperature, blood glucose, blood pressure, blood pH, and water balance.

Feedback Mechanisms

  • Negative Feedback: Reverses a change and brings the body back toward its normal range. Example: When body temperature rises, sweating helps cool the body and restore temperature.

  • Positive Feedback: Amplifies or increases the original change. Example: During childbirth, contractions cause oxytocin release, which increases contractions until delivery. Another example: blood clotting.

Memory tricks: Negative feedback reverses the change; positive feedback pushes the process further.

Anatomical Position and Directional Terms

Anatomical Position

The anatomical position is the standard reference used to describe body structures.

Major Body Cavities

The body contains several major cavities that house internal organs.

  • Dorsal body cavity: Located toward the back; includes the cranial cavity (brain) and vertebral (spinal) cavity (spinal cord).

  • Ventral body cavity: Located toward the front; includes the thoracic cavity (heart, lungs, trachea, esophagus, thymus, major blood vessels) and abdominopelvic cavity (abdominal and pelvic cavities).

Thoracic Cavity

  • Contains the heart (in the mediastinum) and lungs (in right and left pleural cavities).

  • Mediastinum: Central region between the lungs; contains the heart and other structures.

  • Note: The lungs are not inside the mediastinum.

Abdominal Cavity

  • Contains the stomach, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, small intestine, large intestine, kidneys.

Pelvic Cavity

  • Contains the urinary bladder, internal reproductive organs, rectum.

Diaphragm

  • Separates the thoracic cavity from the abdominopelvic cavity.

  • Above diaphragm = thoracic cavity; below diaphragm = abdominopelvic cavity.
